Kenmore washer F21 code: what it means and what to check
Your Kenmore washer may stop before spin, leave water in the tub, keep the door locked, or leave clothes dripping wet. F21 is a drain fault on many Kenmore front-load washers, especially Whirlpool-built Elite and HE models. Start with the drain path before assuming the pump is bad.

The Kenmore washer F21 code means the control did not see the tub drain within the set time, often 8 minutes on Whirlpool-built Kenmore front-load machines. A common cause is a clogged pump cleanout or drain path, with lint, coins, hair pins, or small clothing caught ahead of the pump.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Try one drain cycle
Press Stop or Pause/Cancel twice, then try Drain/Spin once. If the washer hums, drains slowly, or locks again with water inside, don't keep restarting it.
- Check the drain hose
Look behind the washer for a crushed or kinked hose. The hose outlet should sit in the standpipe without being sealed tight, since a backed-up home drain can make F21 look like a washer fault.
- Watch the standpipe
Run a short drain cycle while watching the wall drain or laundry sink. If water comes back up, stop the washer and clear the home drain before blaming the machine.
- Clear excess suds
If SUD showed before F21, run Rinse/Spin with no detergent after the water is able to drain. Too much detergent, or the wrong detergent, can slow draining on these Whirlpool-built Kenmore fronts.
- Clean only an accessible pump cleanout
Some models have a pump cleanout shown in the owner's manual. If yours is accessible without removing a service panel, unplug the washer first, use towels and a shallow pan, then pull out coins, lint, hair pins, or fabric from the filter. Leave panel removal and hidden drain parts to a technician.
- Reset after the drain path is checked
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes only after the hose, standpipe, suds, and any accessible cleanout have been checked. A reset may clear a one-time control fault, but it won't move water past a clog.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
- Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Does F21 mean the drain pump is bad?
No. A bad pump is possible, but many F21 calls are caused by a clogged pump trap, blocked hose, or debris in the drain path. Clear the restriction first.
Will unplugging the washer clear F21?
It may clear a one-time control fault if the washer has already drained. If water is still in the tub, the code will usually return because the washer still can't move water out fast enough.
Why did SUD show before F21?
SUD can appear when the washer detects too much foam, a heavy load, or poor draining. Too much detergent can slow the drain process, then F21 appears when the tub doesn't empty in time.
Is the Kenmore Elite washer F21 code the same as Whirlpool Duet?
On Whirlpool-built Kenmore Elite HE3 and similar front-load models, yes. When the model tag and tech sheet match the Duet design, F21 points to a long drain fault.
Can I keep running loads with F21?
No. The washer may leave clothes soaked, keep the door locked, or stop before spin. Clear the drain issue before running another full load.
