LE code on a Kenmore washer: what it means and what to check

You may see LE when the washer tries to spin, bumps once, hums, or stops mid-cycle. The tub may still turn by hand. This page shows what you can check safely before a technician tests the motor sensor circuit.

What the display shows
Straight answer

On many Kenmore washers, the LE code means the control sees a locked motor or it can't read motor speed, so the tub won't turn at the right speed. The first cause to rule out is an overloaded or sudsy load, since that can make the motor strain even when no part has failed.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the control

Unplug the washer for 10 minutes, then plug it back in and try Drain/Spin. If LE clears and doesn't return, the control may have logged a one-time motor fault.

  2. Lighten the load

Cancel the cycle, remove some laundry, then restart with the basket filled loosely. Heavy loads can make the motor stall at startup, which can set LE.

  3. Check for too many suds

If you see foam in the tub, let the washer sit for 30 minutes. Run Drain/Spin to clear the sudsy water, then run a rinse cycle with no added detergent. Use HE detergent, about 1 tablespoon per load on future washes.

  4. Turn the basket by hand

With the washer off and the clothes removed, turn the inner basket by hand. It should rotate smoothly with no hard stop, scrape, or grinding feel. A coin, small item, or bad spin bearing can bind the basket and trigger LE.

  5. Find the model prefix

Check the model tag near the door or lid. LG-built Kenmore washers on this code path usually have a 796 prefix. If your washer has a different prefix, match the LE meaning and parts to the full model number.

Hot and cold hoses connect at the back, with small screens inside the valve inlets. The lid lock sits at the back of the lid opening. If the drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe, water can siphon out while it fills.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Hall sensor, RPS, or motor position sensorTest the sensor at the motor after power is disconnected and the motor area is open. On the LG-style sensor, check resistance between pins 1 and 5, then pins 2 and 5; readings around 10K ohms are expected, while OL or a much lower reading points to a bad sensor.
Motor wire loomCheck continuity from the motor and RPS plug back toward the control or lower junction point while flexing the wire run. An intermittent open with no visible damage is a known tell, especially where the wires leave the stator and pass through the frame.
Rotor assemblyRemove the rotor and inspect the inner splines, magnets, and center bolt. Stripped splines, cracked magnets, broken magnets, or a loose rotor bolt can cause a no-spin complaint or mimic a bad sensor. Confirm the rotor is secure and intact before condemning the Hall sensor.
Stator assemblyOhm the stator phases between pins 1 and 2, pins 1 and 3, then pins 2 and 3. Readings should be in the 5 to 15 ohm range; an open, shorted, or out-of-range phase points to a failed stator.
Main control boardIf the sensor, wiring, rotor, and stator test good, the control board is the remaining suspect. A technician checks connectors for heat marks or loose pins, then verifies the board is sending and reading the motor circuit correctly before replacing it.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LE code on a Kenmore washer?

Yes. Unplug the washer for 10 minutes, then restart a drain or spin cycle. If LE comes back, the washer needs a load, suds, basket, or motor-circuit check.

Can too much detergent cause LE?

Yes. Heavy suds can make the motor work harder and confuse the spin control. Let the foam settle, drain it out, then rinse the load without adding more detergent.

If the drum turns by hand, what part is checked next?

A technician usually checks the Hall sensor, also called the RPS, and the motor wiring first. The tub can turn smoothly by hand while the control still gets a bad motor-position signal.

Is LE the same on Kenmore Elite front-load and top-load washers?

Not exactly. On 796 LG-built Kenmore machines, LE is motor-related, but front-load and top-load checks can differ. Use the full model tech sheet before following a Hall sensor, rotor, stator, or wiring test path.

Should I keep trying cycles after LE appears?

No. Repeated starts can heat the motor circuit and make diagnosis harder. Drain the water if needed, unplug the washer, and stop if the code returns after the simple checks.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
