LG dryer d90 code: what it means and how to fix it

Your LG dryer may stop mid-cycle, beep, show d90, or show several Flow Sense bars. This page explains what that code means, what to check first, and when it points to a part inside the dryer.

Straight answer

The LG dryer d90 code means the Flow Sense system sees a severe exhaust airflow restriction, about 90% blocked. The single most common cause is lint or debris somewhere in the vent path, often in the wall duct, outside hood, or crushed hose behind the dryer.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Clean the lint screen and test for softener film

Pull the lint screen and remove lint by hand, then wash the mesh with warm water and a little dish soap. If water beads on the screen instead of passing through the mesh, fabric softener film is blocking airflow even though the screen looks clean.

  2. Check the hose behind the dryer

Turn the dryer off and unplug it before looking behind it. The vent hose should be rigid or semi-rigid metal, with no crushed spots, sharp bends, loose joints, or long sagging loops.

  3. Look at the outside vent while the dryer runs

Run Air Dry and go outside to the exhaust hood. The flap should open fully, with steady airflow and no packed lint around the outlet.

  4. Clear the easy lint, then retry Timed Dry

Remove visible lint from the outside hood and the end of the hose if you can reach it safely. Use Timed Dry for the test, since Sensor Dry can end early with a single towel or very small load.

  5. Use the vent-disconnect test carefully

With the dryer unplugged, a homeowner can disconnect the short vent hose from the back if it is easy to reach. If d90 goes away with the dryer exhausting into the room for a brief electric-dryer test, the blockage is in the house duct or hood. For a gas dryer, do not run it venting indoors unless a qualified person sets up the test safely.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Home exhaust duct and outside hoodRun Timed Dry with the vent attached, then repeat with the transition duct removed from the dryer. If d90 or d95 stops with the vent removed, the restriction is in the wall duct, roof or side outlet, flap, length, or number of bends; a CFM meter gives a better airflow call than feeling it by hand.
Transition duct behind dryerInspect for crushed foil, tight 90 degree bends, loose joints, lint packed at the collar, or a hose pushed flat when the dryer is slid back. Rigid or semi-rigid metal with a smooth path is the correct setup.
Lint filter and lint chuteCheck the filter with a water pass-through test and inspect the slot below it with a light. A screen that sheds water, a mat of lint down in the chute, or a screen that doesn't seat flat can trigger Flow Sense because the blower is starved before air reaches the drum.
Thermistor or thermostat on blower housingWith power removed, the technician opens the cabinet and tests the sensor circuit with a meter. A failed thermistor will read open, shorted, or fail to change resistance as temperature changes; a failed thermostat may show an open circuit when it should be closed.
Blower wheel and motor airflowThe technician checks for lint packed in the blower housing, a cracked blower wheel, or a wheel that slips on the motor shaft. If the dryer heats but airflow stays weak with a clear vent path, the blower side gets checked before blaming the control.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will resetting the dryer clear the LG dryer d90 code?

A reset may clear the display for one cycle, but it won't fix the airflow problem. If the duct is still restricted, the code will come back.

Can I keep using the dryer with a d90 code?

No. A severely restricted exhaust can overheat the dryer and lint path, so stop using it until the vent system is cleaned or repaired.

What is the difference between d80, d90, and d95?

They are Flow Sense restriction levels. d90 means the dryer is reading a much heavier airflow restriction than d80, while d95 means it is reading an even more severe blockage.

Why does Sensor Dry end early while d90 appears on Timed Dry?

Sensor Dry needs enough wet clothes to touch the moisture bars inside the drum. A single cloth or tiny load can make Sensor Dry cut the cycle short, so Timed Dry is a clearer test for this fault.

Does d90 mean the thermistor is bad?

Usually no. The vent system is far more likely, but a thermistor or thermostat becomes suspect after the dryer runs cleanly with the vent removed and the full exhaust path has been verified.
