LG dryer not turning on: what it means and what to do

Your LG dryer may be completely dead, or it may light up and only beep when you press Start. This page shows the safe checks to make first, then what a technician tests when the dryer has power but won't run.

Straight answer

An LG dryer not turning on usually means the dryer has lost power, or the control is powered while the motor start circuit is being held open by a safety part. The single most common thing to check first is the home power feed, especially a tripped breaker or a switched outlet.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the display and drum light

Open the door and look for the drum light, then press Power and watch the display. If the light is on but the control will not wake up, LG treats that as a repair issue after the power checks below.

  2. Reset the breaker the right way

Turn the dryer breaker off, wait 5 seconds, then turn it back on. Electric dryers use two breaker handles, while gas dryers usually use one, so reset the whole dryer circuit.

  3. Check the plug, outlet, and wall switch

Make sure the cord is fully seated. Some laundry outlets are controlled by a wall switch, so check nearby switches before assuming the dryer has failed.

  4. Look for Child Lock or a delayed cycle

If CL is on the display, hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds. Also switch out of Steam Dry or any cycle that may delay tumbling during part of the cycle.

  5. Close the door with a firm push

LG dryers won't start unless the door switch tells the control the door is shut. If it only beeps when you press Start, the dryer may still think the door is open, even when the drum light seems to work.

  6. Try LG's hard reset

Unplug the dryer and turn the breaker off. With power removed, hold Power/Start for 5 seconds, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds; restore power and try a timed dry cycle.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Incoming power and terminal blockFor a dead dryer, a technician verifies the outlet, cord, breaker, and terminal block before condemning the machine. On an electric LG dryer, one lost leg can leave odd symptoms, so both supply legs are checked at the dryer with the unit accessed safely.
Door switchAt the main PCB, continuity is checked between the BL2 plug with the single yellow wire and the white wire plug near the rear power entry. Door closed should show continuity; door open should show an open circuit, and no change points to a bad door switch or wiring fault.
Thermal fuse on blower housingWith power removed, the two wires are taken off the fuse and the fuse is checked for continuity. A good fuse reads closed; an open fuse means it has blown, often after overheating from restricted airflow.
Belt and belt switchA loose drum that turns with little drag points toward a broken belt, and the belt may be found off the drum or able to pull out by hand. The belt switch can be checked from the PCB between the BL2 yellow wire circuit and the brown wire at relay X2, then confirmed at the switch: open with the lever released, continuity with the lever pressed.
Drive motor and main PCBA technician checks motor output voltage at the control by testing between the brown wire terminal at relay X2 and the yellow wire connector at BL2 after Power and Start are pressed. About 120 VAC with a silent motor points to a failed motor; no output after the safety circuit checks good points toward the PCB.

Common questions about appliance repair

Why does my LG dryer beep when I press Start but not run?

That often means the control is not seeing a closed door signal. The drum light can still turn on and off while the door switch fails the motor-start part of the circuit.

Can I reset an LG dryer that won't turn on?

Yes. Remove power, hold Power/Start for 5 seconds, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds before restoring power; if it stays dead, the next step is electrical testing by a technician.

Does Child Lock stop an LG dryer from starting?

Yes. If CL is showing, hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds, then try a normal timed cycle.

Is this different on a gas LG dryer versus an electric LG dryer?

The start circuit checks are similar, but the power supply is different. Electric models use two breaker handles, while gas models usually use one and also need the gas valve shut off before internal service.

Should I check warranty status first?

Yes, especially if the dryer is newer. Have the model and serial number ready, then check coverage with LG before approving a paid repair.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
