LG dryer nP code: what it means and what to check first
Your LG dryer may start and tumble with an nP code, or it may stop soon after you press Start. Clothes stay wet because the heater isn't getting the power the control expects. This page shows the safe checks first, then what a technician tests if the code comes back.

The LG dryer nP code means the control is not detecting current at the electric heater, usually because the dryer is missing part of its 240 volt supply. The single most common cause is a home power problem, often one side of the double breaker, a loose outlet, or a bad cord connection that lets the drum run while the heater stays cold.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Stop if you see heat damage
If the plug, outlet, or cord is warm, discolored, melted, or smells burnt, turn the dryer breaker off and don't run the dryer. That points to a loose or damaged power connection, which can overheat under load.
- Reset the dryer breaker the right way
Find the double breaker for the dryer. Push it fully to OFF, wait at least 10 seconds, then turn it back ON. This solves many nP calls because one side of a 240 volt breaker can trip while the dryer still has enough power to light up and tumble.
- Try Timed Dry after the reset
Set the dryer to Timed Dry and run it for a few minutes. Auto cycles can confuse the test because they depend on sensor input. If nP returns right away or after a short run, keep going.
- Check the plug, outlet, and cord from the outside
Make sure the dryer plug is fully seated in the wall outlet. Look at the cord for cracks, melted spots, or burn marks. If the dryer is on an extension cord, stop using that setup and plug the dryer only into the correct dryer outlet.
- Think about recent installation work
If the dryer was just installed, moved, or the cord was changed, call the installer back to check the cord and outlet. A miswired terminal block can cause voltage errors, and LG also links PS codes to improper power cord wiring.
- Power reset the control
Turn the dryer off, unplug it or switch the breaker off, wait 2 minutes, then restore power. This can clear a one-time control fault. If nP returns, the next step is voltage testing by a technician or electrician.
Conditions that make this more likely
Check both breakers
Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Can I clear the LG dryer nP code with a reset?
Sometimes. Turn the double breaker fully off, wait at least 10 seconds, then turn it back on. If the code returns, don't keep cycling power over and over because the dryer is likely losing heater power.
Why does the dryer run if it has a power problem?
An electric dryer can power the controls and motor from one 120 volt leg. The heater needs the full 240 volt supply, so the drum may turn while there is no heat.
Is nP caused by a clogged vent or lint filter?
Usually no. A clogged vent causes long dry times and Flow Sense or d80 style codes on many LG dryers. nP points to heater power detection, so start with the breaker, outlet, cord, and terminal block.
Should I call an electrician or an appliance repair company?
If the outlet is loose, warm, discolored, or voltage is missing at the wall, call an electrician. If correct power is present at the dryer terminal block, a repair company can test the cord block, heater circuit, board, and motor switch.
Can a new LG dryer show nP because it was installed wrong?
Yes. A loose cord screw, wrong cord placement, or outlet issue can show up right after installation. Have the installer verify the cord hookup and the 240 volt supply before any dryer parts are replaced.
