LG dryer not drying: what it means and what to check

Your LG dryer may run, tumble, and count down like normal, yet the load still comes out damp. This page walks through the checks that help most often, then shows what a technician tests when cleaning and settings don't solve it.

Straight answer

An LG dryer not drying usually means the dryer can't move hot, damp air out of the drum, or it isn't making heat in the first place. The single most common cause is restricted airflow from lint, a crushed vent hose, a blocked wall duct, or an outside flap that isn't able to open.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Clean the lint screen and the slot under it

Pull the lint screen and clean it fully. If it looks coated or waxy from dryer sheets, wash it with warm water and mild dish soap, let it dry, then vacuum the slot where the filter sits.

  2. Check the cycle settings

Turn off Energy Saver or Eco settings for this test. Use Time Dry or Manual Dry with medium or high heat, since Air Dry and No Heat won't make heat.

  3. Look behind the dryer

Check the vent hose for a sharp bend, crushed section, loose clamp, or heavy lint. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct works properly with fewer lint traps than a long soft hose.

  4. Check the outside vent

Run an Air Dry cycle and look at the outside exhaust. The flap should open all the way, and you should feel steady airflow; weak air points to a duct blockage in the wall or roof path.

  5. Try a smaller load

A packed drum can tumble without moving air through the clothes. Towels, bedding, and jeans need space, so test with a smaller damp load before assuming a failed part.

  6. Clean the moisture sensor bars

If Time Dry works but Sensor Dry ends with damp clothes, wipe the metal sensor bars inside the drum with a damp cloth. Film on those bars can make the dryer think the load is dry too soon.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Exhaust duct and blower pathThe technician runs the LG installation test or a heated test cycle, then checks for Flow Sense warnings such as d80, d90, or d95. Strong heat with weak exhaust at the outlet points away from the heater and toward the duct, vent hood, blower housing, or lint packed below the filter.
240 volt supply on electric modelsAt the terminal block, a technician checks for about 120 volts from neutral to each line and about 240 volts line to line. If one leg is missing, the drum can run while the heater stays off, often with nP or PF type power complaints.
Electric heater assemblyWith the heater isolated, the element is checked across its terminals. A common LG heater test is about 20 ohms red to blue, about 40 ohms blue to yellow, and about 20 ohms red to yellow; an open reading, a far-off reading, or continuity from a heater terminal to the metal can means the heater housing is bad.
Thermal cutoff or thermal fuseA technician removes at least one wire and checks continuity through the safety part. A good cutoff reads close to 0 ohms; an open fuse usually means the dryer overheated, so the vent system has to be checked before the part is replaced.
Condenser drain pump on LG washer dryer combo modelsOn ventless combo units, the pump should move condensed water to the tank or drain hose during dry operation. No water in the reservoir, water sitting in the base trough, or lint in the pump area points to a stuck pump, blocked hose, or condenser lint restriction.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG dryer that isn't drying?

You can unplug it or turn the breaker off for a few minutes, then restart it. A reset may clear a control glitch, but it won't clear lint, a crushed hose, a missing 240 volt leg, or a failed heater part.

Why does my LG dryer get warm but still leave clothes damp?

That usually points to airflow. The heater can work, yet moisture stays in the drum if the filter slot, rear hose, wall duct, or outside vent is blocked.

Why does Time Dry work better than Sensor Dry?

Time Dry ignores the moisture sensor and runs for the time you set. If Time Dry finishes loads but Sensor Dry stops early, clean the sensor bars and try a mixed load that can touch the bars as it tumbles.

Does this apply to an LG washer dryer combo not drying?

Partly. A combo unit may also have condenser lint buildup, a drain pump problem, or a hose routing issue, especially if the reservoir stays dry while the clothes stay wet.

Should I keep using the dryer with a Flow Sense warning?

Use it as little as possible until the airflow problem is found. Repeated overheating can open the thermal fuse and turn a vent issue into a repair.
