5d Maytag washer code: what it means and how to clear it

Your Maytag display may show 5d, Sd, or Sud, often during rinse, drain, or spin. On these displays, the S can look like a 5. This page explains what to try first, when it points to a clog, and what a technician tests if the code comes back.

Straight answer

The 5d Maytag washer code is usually the Sd or Sud code, which means the control sees excess suds or a suds-lock condition during drain or spin. The most common cause is detergent trouble, usually too much soap or non-HE soap in an HE washer.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Let the washer finish its suds routine

If the tub is full of foam, don't keep restarting the cycle. Maytag says the washer may add water and run a suds reduction routine, so give it time to clear the foam on its own.

  2. Check detergent type and dose

Use HE detergent only, then use the dose on the bottle for the load size and soil level. Concentrated soaps can be 2x, 4x, or 8x, so a normal-looking pour can still be far too much.

  3. Run an empty clean cycle

Remove the clothes, then run Clean Washer or an empty hot cycle with no detergent. This can help flush leftover soap film from the tub and the small water-level air tube.

  4. Lighten or re-balance the load

A bunched load can make the basket drag, which can make the control think it has a suds-lock. Take out bulky items, spread the load, then try Drain and Spin.

  5. Look at the visible drain hose

Check the hose behind the washer for kinks, crushed spots, or a deep push into the standpipe. If water can't leave fast enough, the washer may stay wet and keep calling it a suds problem.

  6. Check only an easy-access pump cleanout

Some front-load Maytag washers have a small lower door for the pump cleanout. If yours has one, unplug the washer, put towels down, drain slowly, and remove lint, coins, hair, or fabric pieces from the trap.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pump and pump filterTech checks for standing water, slow drain, debris in the pump trap, and an impeller that is jammed or loose on the shaft. If the pump hums but water barely moves, the hose and trap get cleared before a pump is called bad.
Pressure switch or water-level sensor air tubeTech inspects the small air tube for soap sludge, kinks, splits, or water trapped in the line. If the tube is clear, the switch or sensor is tested through service diagnostics and by checking whether the control sees the water level change as the tub fills and drains.
Drive hub, basket, and wash plateOn top-load models, the wash plate is checked for wobble, stripped splines, and rough basket movement. A basket that drags, tick-tocks, or won't ramp into spin can trigger Sd because the control reads the load as a suds-lock.
Motor rotor position sensor circuitFor Whirlpool-built Maytag top-load machines, the tech sheet points to the motor circuit test and manual motor spin test when Sd appears with spin trouble. A failed test means the control isn't getting clean speed or direction feedback from the motor system.
Machine control boardControl failure is considered after suds, drain flow, pressure sensing, basket drag, and motor feedback check out. A tech looks for stored fault history, failed diagnostic steps, or a board that won't command drain or spin when the connected parts test properly.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Maytag washer 5d code?

You can try Pause/Cancel twice, Power once, or unplug the washer for 60 seconds. If the code comes back, treat it as a real suds, drain, pressure, or spin problem.

Why does it say 5d when I don't see suds?

The control may be seeing slow drain, a blocked pump filter, a plugged pressure tube, or basket drag. It calls that condition suds-lock because the motor can't spin the load the way it expects.

Should I keep using detergent pods?

Pods can work, but larger ones should be saved for large or heavily soiled loads. For a small load, a big pod can leave too much soap in the tub.

Is the 5d code different on front-load and top-load Maytag washers?

The meaning is the same: excess suds or suds-lock. Access is different, since some front-load models hide the pump filter behind panels while many top-load complaints point more toward load balance, drain hose issues, or drive hub wear.

Is a newer washer with a 5d code usually a bad board?

Usually, no. Start with detergent amount, an empty clean cycle, and drain checks before blaming the board.
