Maytag washer not spinning: what to check first

Your Maytag washer may wash, drain, then leave clothes soaked because the basket never reaches spin speed. This page helps you sort out simple load and drain issues from the common failed parts a technician tests on Maytag top-load and front-load washers.

Straight answer

A Maytag washer not spinning means the machine either stopped the spin for safety or the drive system can't turn the basket fast enough to extract water. On Maytag Centennial and other VMW top-load washers, the most common failed spin part called out in service troubleshooting is the shift actuator.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Lighten and rebalance the load

Open the washer and move heavy items around the basket. Towels, jeans, bedding, and rugs can clump on one side, which makes the washer stop or repeat an unbalanced-load warning.

  2. Check the cycle and spin speed

Delicate, hand wash, and gentle cycles use slower spin speeds, so clothes can feel wetter at the end. For towels or other absorbent loads, use a cycle meant for stronger spin if the fabric label allows it.

  3. Make sure the lid or door is fully closed

A Maytag washer won't spin if it can't confirm the lid or door is locked. Clear clothing from the lid area, close it firmly, then start a Drain and Spin cycle.

  4. Look for a drain problem

If there is standing water in the tub, treat it as a drain issue first. Straighten the drain hose, look for a kink or clog at the hose or standpipe, and on front-load models with an accessible pump filter, clean the filter as your manual shows.

  5. Run Drain and Spin after a power interruption

If the washer lost power during the cycle, it may have never reached the final spin. Select Drain and Spin to see whether the basket can finish the job.

  6. Do the empty washplate check on a top-loader

With the washer off and empty, turn the washplate at the bottom of the basket by hand. If the washplate turns by itself while the basket stays still, the hub under the washplate is likely stripped.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Shift actuator, VMW top-loadPull stored codes and look for F7E1 or F7E5, then run the manual spin or component test from the service sheet. If the lid locks but there is no shift click before spin, or the code returns after clearing, the actuator is a leading suspect.
Washplate hubWith the basket empty, turn the washplate by hand. A good hub turns the basket with the washplate; a stripped hub lets the washplate slip while the basket stays still, so clothes get thrown outward without real water extraction.
Lid lock assemblyCheck for F5E1, F5E2, or F5E3 codes and run the lid-lock step in diagnostics. If the control calls for lock and the lock never engages, the washer will not allow spin.
Drive motor or motor capacitor, belt-drive top-loadFor the W10832724 style motor, isolate the motor and read from the white terminal to the orange and red terminals. Each winding should read 3.5 to 6 ohms; out-of-range readings or a pulley that will not turn smoothly point to a failed motor, while slow spin ramp-up can point to the capacitor.
Front-load stator, rotor, wiring, and ACUInspect the rotor magnets and stator area for cracked magnets, loose pieces, debris, heat marks, corrosion, or weak connector fit. Stator windings should read 6 to 20 ohms between each pair and stay within 1 ohm of each other; if the motor circuit checks good, a technician checks ACU input at J2 and motor output at J6.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset fix a Maytag washer that will not spin?

Sometimes, if the cycle was interrupted or the control got stuck. Cancel the cycle, run Drain and Spin, then see whether the same symptom returns with a small balanced load.

Why does my Maytag washer drain but not spin?

That points away from the pump and toward the spin system. On many Maytag top-loaders, a shift actuator, lid lock, stripped hub, belt, splutch, capacitor, or motor fault can cause this exact pattern.

Is a Maytag top-load washer diagnosed the same as a front-load washer?

No. VMW top-loaders often use a shift actuator, belt, splutch, and hub, while front-loaders are checked more like a motor-control problem with the door lock, drain, stator, rotor, wiring, and ACU.

Can too much detergent stop the spin?

Yes. Heavy suds can keep the washer from pumping water correctly, which can block or delay spin. Use measured HE detergent and run a rinse or clean cycle if the tub is full of suds.

Should I repair an older Maytag washer that needs a gearcase?

Maybe, but that repair is in a higher cost class than a lid lock, actuator, belt, or hub. If the washer is older and also has control or motor issues, replacement may be the more sensible choice.
