Maytag washer not filling with water: what to check first

Your Maytag may sit and sense the load, hum with no water, trickle in slowly, or leave dry spots on clothes. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the washer still won’t fill.

Straight answer

A Maytag washer not filling with water is either being starved by the home water supply or the washer is failing to open the inlet valve. The single most common failed part is the water inlet valve, especially when the machine gets power but no water enters.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check both supply valves

Make sure the hot and cold faucets behind the washer are turned all the way open. Maytag says both hoses must be connected and turned on because the washer uses pressure from both sides, even on some cold wash settings.

  2. Look for kinked or crushed fill hoses

Pull the washer out only far enough to see the hoses. A sharp bend behind the cabinet can slow the fill enough to look like a bad valve.

  3. Clean the inlet screens

Turn off the water, remove the hoses from the back of the washer, and look into the valve ports. If the small screens are packed with sand, rust, or mineral scale, brush them gently with mild soap and water without pulling the screens out of place.

  4. Confirm water flow from the house

With the hoses removed from the washer and aimed into a bucket, open each faucet briefly. Weak flow here points to a plumbing valve, blocked hose, or home pressure problem rather than the washer.

  5. Check cycle choice and load size

Some HE Maytag washers use much less water than older machines, so clothes may not be covered. Try Bulky Items, Deep Fill, or Deep Wash if your model has that option, and don’t pack the basket tight.

  6. Check the drain hose position

If the drain hose is shoved too far into the standpipe, the washer can siphon water out as it fills. Keep the hose installed as the manual shows, with the end at the proper standpipe height and not sealed airtight.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Inlet screens clog quietly

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Water inlet valveRun the hot and cold valves in diagnostic or manual test mode. On many Maytag top-load valve circuits, each solenoid should read about 890 to 1,300 ohms through the valve connector; an open or out-of-range reading points to a bad valve.
Inlet valve mechanical sideWith a fill command active, check for about 120 VAC at the valve. If voltage is present and water still doesn’t pass after the screens and supply are clear, the valve plunger or internal diaphragm is stuck and the valve gets replaced.
Pressure hose and pressure sensing systemInspect the small tube from the tub air dome to the switch or control for kinks, suds, water, detergent sludge, or loose fit. If the washer skips fill and starts agitating dry, the control may be reading a full tub when the basket is empty.
Main control boardVerify incoming power at the board, then command a fill in diagnostics and check whether the board sends about 120 VAC to the valve. If the pressure hose is clear, the valve circuit is intact, and the board never sends voltage during fill, the board or its pressure sensor circuit is suspect.
Lid switch or door lockOn models that won’t fill unless the lid or door is confirmed closed, test the switch or lock circuit for the correct state change. A failed lock can leave the washer sitting with lights on but no fill command.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset fix a Maytag washer that won’t fill?

A reset can clear a stuck cycle, so unplug the washer for one minute and try a normal cycle again. If it still won’t fill, start with water supply, hoses, and inlet screens before assuming the control is bad.

Why does my Maytag washer fill only a little?

Many HE models don’t cover the clothes with water. If the clothes are wet and the cycle completes, try Deep Fill or Bulky Items, then reduce the load size.

Why does it hum but no water comes in?

A hum during fill often means the valve is being energized. If the faucets are on and the screens are clear, the valve may be stuck shut from wear or mineral buildup.

Can clogged inlet screens stop the washer from filling?

Yes. Sand, rust, or hard-water scale can pack the small screens where the hoses connect to the washer, causing a slow fill or long-fill error.

Is a front-load Maytag different from a top-load Maytag for this problem?

The basic checks are similar: water supply, inlet screens, valve, pressure sensing, and door or lid safety input. Front-load models lean more on the door lock signal, while top-load models may use a lid switch or lock before fill.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
