F21 code Maytag washer: what it means and how to fix it

Your Maytag washer may stop mid-cycle, leave water in the drum, or show F21 right before spin. This page shows the safe checks first, then what a technician tests if the code comes back.

Straight answer

On most Maytag front-load washers, F21 means the washer took too long to drain the tub. The most common cause is a blocked pump filter or coin trap packed with lint, coins, socks, bobby pins, or other debris.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the control

Press Pause/Cancel twice if your model responds, then unplug the washer for 5 minutes. A reset can clear a control hang, but it won't cure a slow drain.

  2. Look at the drain hose

Pull the washer only far enough to see the hose. Straighten visible kinks, check for a crushed section behind the cabinet, and make sure the hose isn't shoved too far into the standpipe.

  3. Check the standpipe or laundry sink

If the home drain is backing up, the washer can show F21 even when the pump is working. The hose end should be 30 to 96 inches above the floor where it enters the drain.

  4. Let suds settle

If Sud or Sd appears with F21, wait 30 to 60 minutes for foam to drop. Run Rinse and Spin with no detergent, then switch to HE detergent at a smaller dose.

  5. Clean the filter only if it has an access door

Some models have a small front drain-filter door. Unplug the washer, set towels and a shallow pan under the cap, then loosen it slowly; if the filter is behind a screwed-on lower service panel, leave that step for a technician. This is often the step that clears F21 when the coin trap is reachable.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pump and coin trapWith power removed, the technician pulls the catch and checks the impeller for debris, broken fins, or a sock wrapped behind it. In drain mode, a good command should put 120 VAC at the pump; a pump that has 120 VAC and doesn't run, grinds, or reads far from about 15 ohms is suspect.
Drain hose and standpipeThe technician disconnects the hose and confirms water passes through it. A crushed hose, a clog in the corrugated hose, or a backed-up standpipe can make a good pump time out.
Tub-to-pump sump hose and ball valveThe large black sump hose can hide small laundry and pocket items ahead of the pump. On these Whirlpool-built Maytag fronts, the white plastic ball in that hose is easy to mistake for junk; the side port toward the pressure tube can pack with brown detergent sludge.
Pressure switch hose and air domeThe technician checks the small pressure tube for kinks, splits, water, or sludge, then verifies the pressure switch changes state as the tub empties. If the tub is empty but the control still reads water, the pressure path or switch is suspect.
Central control unitAfter the pump, drain path, and pressure path pass, the technician checks whether the control sends pump voltage during a drain command. No pump output with sound wiring points to a failed drain relay on the board.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will unplugging reset the F21 code?

Yes, unplugging for 5 minutes can clear the displayed code. If the washer still drains slowly, F21 will return on the next drain or spin.

Why does Sud or Sd show before F21?

Too much detergent can make foam that the washer reads as a suds lock. Let the foam drop, then run Rinse and Spin with no detergent.

Can I clean the pump filter myself?

Only if your model has a small access door for the filter. If the coin trap sits behind a screwed-on service panel or the washer is full of water, a repair company is the safer call.

Do Bravos and Centennial washers use F21 the same way?

Some Bravos and Centennial references point F21 or EF21 toward a motor, belt, or agitation fault instead of a drain fault. If your washer stops during agitation rather than drain, the tech sheet matters.

Is F21 worth repairing on an older Maytag?

Often, yes, when it's a clog, hose issue, or drain pump. If the washer also has loud bearing noise, tub looseness, or repeated board faults, a technician may advise replacement.
