SD code on a Maytag washer: what it means and how to fix it

Your Maytag washer may pause, add time, flash SD, Sud, or 5d, then leave clothes wetter than normal. This page shows what to check first without taking the washer apart, plus what a technician tests when the code keeps coming back.

Straight answer

The SD code on a Maytag washer means the control thinks there are too many suds, so it runs a suds-reduction routine and may stretch or stop the cycle. The most common cause is too much detergent for the load, especially concentrated HE detergent or a large detergent pac in a small load.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Let the suds routine finish

If the washer is still running, let it continue instead of canceling right away. Maytag says the machine may add time while it tries to clear the foam.

  2. Check the detergent type and dose

Use HE detergent, then measure for the load size and soil level. Concentrated formulas can need a much smaller pour than older detergents, and a large pac can be too much for a small load.

  3. Run a rinse and spin with no detergent

If you can see foam in the drum, run rinse and spin with no soap. Repeat if suds are still visible, since built-up detergent can keep foaming after the first rinse.

  4. Avoid sudsing additives

Thick no-splash or easy-pour liquid chlorine bleach can foam in some washers. If the SD code started after using an additive, run an empty clean-washer cycle or a hot cycle with a washer cleaner approved for your model.

  5. Look for slow-drain clues

Clothes that come out soaked, a cycle that stalls before rinse, or water left in the tub points to a drain restriction. Check that the drain hose isn't kinked or shoved too far into the standpipe.

  6. Clean only an owner-access filter

Some front-load Maytag washers have a pump cleanout you can reach from a small access door. If yours doesn't, don't remove panels for this check. A repair company can clean the pump trap and sump safely.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pump and pump trapA technician checks for slow drain first. The pump trap, sump, and hose ports are inspected for hair, coins, fabric sheets, screws, lint clumps, or a jammed impeller, then the washer is run in drain to confirm strong flow.
Drain hose and standpipe setupThe hose is checked for a kink, crushed section, clogged outlet, or standpipe fit that slows discharge. If the tub drains slowly with the hose routed into a bucket but the pump sounds normal, the restriction may be outside the washer.
Pressure hose and water-level sensorThe pressure hose is inspected for suds residue, debris, pinholes, or a loose fit at the tub and sensor. A technician may clear the hose, run diagnostics, and watch whether the control sees water level changes as the tub fills and drains.
Front-load shock absorbersOn front-load units that show SD mostly with full wet loads, the shocks are checked for oil stains, loose mounts, or a tub that bounces too much by hand. Worn shocks let the load pound around, which can stop spin and leave wet clothes.
Bravos basket float, hub, and drive systemOn some Bravos designs, the basket must lift about 1 inch during agitation so the washplate can move without dragging the whole basket. A technician checks for shaft corrosion, a stuck basket, worn lower hub splines, and debris below the drain screen.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Maytag washer SD code?

You can cancel the cycle, unplug the washer for a short wait, then restart. If there is still foam or water in the tub, the code will likely return until the suds or drain problem is fixed.

Is SD the same as Sud or 5d on a Maytag washer?

Yes. Maytag uses SD, Sud, or 5d to point to the same suds condition on many washers.

Why does the code happen when I didn't use much detergent?

Concentrated detergent can still be too strong for a light load. Built-up soap residue, thick bleach additives, hard-water scale, or a slow drain can also make the washer act like it has excess suds.

Does this happen on both Maytag front-load and load-from-above washers?

Yes. Front-load units often need the pump path checked when clothes stay wet, while some load-from-above Bravos units can have basket drag or hub wear along with drain debris.

Is the SD code covered under warranty?

Detergent overuse, clogged filters, coins, and drain debris are often maintenance or use issues. A failed pump, sensor, shock, drive part, or control may depend on the age of the washer and the coverage tied to your model.
