Samsung dishwasher code 4C: what it means and how to fix it
A Samsung dishwasher showing 4C or 4E is usually sitting there after the first drain, beeping because it did not fill. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when water still won’t enter.

Samsung dishwasher code 4C means the dishwasher did not get the water it expected during the fill part of the cycle. The first likely cause is a restricted water path at the shutoff, fill hose, or the small screen in the water inlet valve.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Open the water shutoff all the way
Look under the sink for the dishwasher water valve and turn it fully open. If plumbing work was done recently, this is the first thing to check.
- Check the fill hose for a bend
Follow the water line from the shutoff toward the dishwasher as far as you can see it. A stainless braided line can get pinched behind the unit or kinked where it loops under the sink.
- Run hot water at the sink first
Run the kitchen hot tap until it gets hot, then start the dishwasher again. Samsung dishwashers can be sensitive to water outside the normal hot-water range, and a long cold run to the kitchen can make the first fill act odd.
- Look for a frozen supply path
If the dishwasher or sink cabinet is in a cold spot, the water valve or fill hose can ice up. Warm the area slowly with room heat or a warm towel around the shutoff area, then retry the cycle.
- Check the inlet screen if it is easy to reach
If your setup lets you reach the fill line connection without pulling the dishwasher apart, shut off water and power, then remove the supply line and look for grit on the small screen at the valve. Owners often clean the round tub filter, but 4C is about the tiny inlet screen where the water line connects.
- Reset it once
Turn the breaker off for 10 minutes, then turn it back on and run a short cycle. If 4C comes back, the dishwasher needs a water-path or electrical test rather than more resets.
Conditions that make this more likely
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
Hard water makes this more likely
Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Is 4C the same as 4E on a Samsung dishwasher?
Yes. On Samsung dishwashers, 4C and 4E both point to a water supply problem. The display style depends on the model.
Why does my dishwasher drain first, then show 4C?
Many Samsung dishwashers run a short drain at the start of a cycle. After that, the control opens the fill valve and watches for a proper fill; if it does not see it, 4C appears.
Should I replace the water inlet valve first?
Only after checking the shutoff valve, hose, and inlet screen. If the screen is packed with grit, cleaning it may restore fill; if the valve gets 120 VAC during fill but does not pass water, replacement is the normal next step.
Can a bad control board cause Samsung dishwasher code 4C?
Yes. If the water supply and valve are good but the board does not send voltage to the inlet valve during fill, the control board becomes a likely fault.
Does 4C mean the tub filter is clogged?
Usually no. The tub filter can cause wash or drain issues, but 4C is tied to incoming water, so the small screen at the water inlet valve matters more for this code.
