Dishwasher not draining Samsung: what it means and what to check
You may see standing water in the tub, a 5C or 5E code, an OC or OE overflow code, or flashing lights after the cycle stops. This guide walks through the safe checks first, then shows what a technician tests when the clog isn't under the sink.

On a Samsung dishwasher, standing water or a 5C, 5E, OC, or OE code means the control can't move water out fast enough or is seeing overflow from poor drainage. The most common cause is a blocked drain path under the sink, especially the disposal inlet, air gap, filter area, or a kinked drain hose.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Run the sink and disposal
Run water in the sink that the dishwasher drains into. If the sink drains slowly, the problem is in the home drain, disposal, or trap rather than the dishwasher.
- Check for a recent disposal install
If a disposal was just replaced, the dishwasher drain plug may still be inside the disposal inlet. That one small plug will stop the dishwasher from draining at all, so have the installer or a plumber check it if you aren't sure.
- Look at the drain hose under the sink
The drain hose should have an air gap or a high loop under the counter. Also look for a sharp bend, a crushed section, or the dishwasher sitting on its own hose after installation.
- Clean the filter and sump area
Pull the lower rack and clean the filter parts the way your manual shows. Use care because glass and sharp bits can hide in the drain area, and put every filter piece back in the correct position.
- Clean the air gap if you have one
The air gap is the small cap near the faucet on some sinks. Lift the cover, remove visible debris, and rinse the insert, since food can pack in there and make water back up instead of draining.
- Reset only after the checks
Turn power to the dishwasher off for about 5 minutes, then start a new cycle. A reset can clear an interrupted cycle, but if the water returns or the code comes back, the machine still has a drain fault.
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Can I reset a Samsung dishwasher that won't drain?
Yes. Turn power off for about 5 minutes, then restore power and start a cycle. If the code or standing water comes back, the reset only cleared the display, not the drain fault.
What do 5C and 5E mean on a Samsung dishwasher?
Both point to a drain problem. The dishwasher is not seeing water leave the tub fast enough, so start with the sink drain, disposal inlet, air gap, drain hose, and filters.
Why did the problem start after a new garbage disposal?
The dishwasher knockout plug inside the disposal inlet may still be in place. That blocks the dishwasher hose connection, so the pump runs but water has nowhere to go.
Is this different on hidden-control and front-control Samsung dishwashers?
The control panel style doesn't change the drain path much. The filter layout, air gap or high loop, pump access, and error display can vary, so use the manual for your exact model when removing filter parts.
When should I call a repair company?
Call if the sink drain, air gap, hose shape, and filter area all check out, or if the pump hums and the tub still holds water. At that point the likely faults are inside the dishwasher, where the drain pump, check valve, case break, and wiring need to be tested.
