Samsung dishwasher code OC: what it means and what to check
Your Samsung dishwasher stopped mid-cycle, may have water in the bottom, and the display says OC, 0C, or oE. This page explains what that code means, what you can safely check first, and when the fault moves into pump, sensor, or valve testing.

Samsung dishwasher code OC means the machine is detecting an over-level water condition, so it thinks there is more water in the tub than there should be. The most common cause is restricted draining, usually a clogged filter, kinked drain hose, blocked sink drain, or plugged disposal connection.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Cancel the cycle and let it drain
Press Cancel or Drain if your model has it, then wait for the pump to stop. If water is on the floor or keeps rising in the tub, stop testing cycles and shut the dishwasher off at the breaker.
- Clean the bottom filter assembly
Pull out the lower rack, twist out the round filter assembly in the sump, and rinse the fine mesh and coarse filter under hot water. Scrub off grease and food film with a small brush, then check the sump cup for seeds, glass, labels, or bones.
- Check the drain hose under the sink
Look where the dishwasher drain hose connects to the sink drain or disposal. A crushed hose, low sag full of water, or heavy kink can slow the drain enough to trigger OC.
- Check the disposal or sink drain
Run the sink and disposal if you have one. If the sink backs up or drains slowly, the dishwasher has nowhere to send the water. On a newer disposal, a missed dishwasher knockout plug can block the drain port completely.
- Reset only after the checks
After the filter and drain path are clear, turn power off at the breaker for 30 seconds, then try a short cycle. A reset may clear the display, but it won't fix a clogged hose, weak pump, bad sensor, or valve that won't close.
- Watch for water entering when it should not
If water keeps seeping into the tub while the dishwasher is off, close the water supply valve under the sink and leave the power off. That points toward an inlet valve that isn't sealing.
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Is OC the same as 0C on a Samsung dishwasher?
Yes, Samsung groups OC, 0C, and oE as over-level water errors. They all mean the dishwasher is detecting more water than it should.
Can I keep running cycles to see if it clears?
Don't keep starting full cycles if the tub is holding water. Clear the filter and drain path first, because repeated fills can make an over-level problem worse.
Will unplugging the dishwasher fix Samsung dishwasher code OC?
A power reset can clear a stored display after the real issue is corrected. If the drain is restricted, the pump is weak, or the inlet valve leaks, the code will come back.
Why does OC show when there isn't much water in the tub?
That can happen when the case break or overflow sensor reports the wrong level. A technician will check for moisture, buildup, sensor wiring issues, and a failed case break assembly.
What if I see soap suds with the OC code?
Too many suds can make water-level sensing act strange and can slow draining. Remove excess suds, clean the filter, then run a rinse-only cycle once the tub is under control.
