Samsung dishwasher not turning on: what to check before repair

Your Samsung dishwasher may be completely dark, or it may light up and refuse to start a cycle. This page separates the quick checks from the repair faults, so you know when it’s a setting, a power issue, a latch problem, or a failed control part.

Straight answer

A Samsung dishwasher not turning on means the control is not getting usable power, or the control is rejecting the door or Start input. The most common simple cause is power shut off at the breaker, nearby wall switch, or under-sink outlet; if the lights are on but Start won’t launch, the door latch or touch panel moves up the list.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Press Power with a dry, clean hand

Samsung touch panels can miss a tap if your fingers are wet or soapy. Wipe the Power area with a damp cloth, dry it, then try Power again.

  2. Check the breaker, wall switch, and outlet

Reset the dishwasher breaker by turning it fully off, then back on. Many kitchens also have a wall switch near the sink that cuts dishwasher power, and some dishwashers plug into an outlet under the sink that can be checked with a lamp.

  3. Make sure the door is truly latched

Push the racks in, move any tall pan or utensil, then close the door firmly. If the door gasket is twisted or the door has to be forced, the latch switch may never tell the control that the door is closed.

  4. Turn off Child Lock or Control Lock

If the padlock light is on or the buttons won’t respond, hold the marked Child Lock or Control Lock button for 3 seconds. On many Samsung panels this is tied to Heated Dry or Sanitize.

  5. Cancel Delay Start and tap Start briefly

Delay Start can make the dishwasher look like it ignored you. Also, don’t hold Start down, because holding it more than 3 seconds can cancel the cycle and start a drain, often with a blinking 1 on the display.

  6. Wait through the first drain

At the start of a cycle, many Samsung dishwashers run the drain pump for about 35 seconds before filling. If you hear a short drain noise first, that part can be normal.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Incoming power connectionA technician checks voltage at the dishwasher supply or junction box, then checks the wall switch path if one is present. Loose wire nuts, heat-darkened copper, or power at the house side with none into the unit points to the home power connection.
Door latch switchWith power off, the latch is actuated by the strike and the switch is checked for continuity. The switch should read zero or nearly zero ohms when closed; an open reading while latched means the control never sees a closed door.
Touch UI control panelIf the unit beeps or changes cycles but Start does nothing, the technician checks the start pad, ribbon connection, and board area for moisture or corrosion. Normal and Quick blinking together can point to a stuck button fault on some panels.
Noise filter or EMI filterThe power wires usually lead to this small board near the main power entry, often with a visible shiny copper coil. Burned spots, corrosion, or input power with no output from the filter makes it suspect.
Main control boardAfter input power, latch, and UI pass tests, the main board is checked for incoming power and visible moisture damage. A dead or erratic control with good power into the board often ends with board replacement.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will resetting a Samsung dishwasher fix no power?

It can clear a locked control. Turn the breaker off for at least 30 seconds, then restore power; if the same fault returns, the reset did its job and the failed part still needs testing.

Why does my Samsung dishwasher make noise before it starts filling?

A short drain at the start of the cycle is normal on many Samsung dishwashers. It clears leftover water first, then fills after about 35 seconds.

The panel lights up, so why won’t it start?

Start with Child Lock, Delay Start, and a brief tap on Start. If those are correct, a bad latch switch or failed touch UI is more likely than a power issue.

Should I replace a thermal fuse for this problem?

Don’t assume there is one. Many Samsung dishwasher no-power guides are generic, so a technician should check the model parts diagram before chasing a thermal fuse.

Could this still be under warranty?

It depends on the age, model, and coverage terms. Have the model and serial number ready before setting up service through a repair company or the maker.
