Samsung dryer HC code: what it means and what to check

Your Samsung dryer may run for a few minutes, get very hot, then stop with HC on the display. Some models show hE, HC4, or 1 HC for the same heating fault. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests if the code comes back.

Straight answer

The samsung dryer hc code means the dryer has detected a heating fault, usually an overheat condition, and it stops the cycle to protect the machine. The single most common cause is restricted airflow from a packed lint screen, crushed vent hose, or blocked outside exhaust.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Clean the lint screen well

Pull the lint screen and remove every layer of lint. If it has a waxy film from dryer sheets, wash it with warm water and mild soap, then dry it before putting it back. Samsung lists lint screen and vent restriction as the most common cause of this code.

  2. Check the vent hose and outside hood

Look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked vent hose. Go outside while the dryer runs on an air-only or low-heat setting and confirm the flap opens with a strong flow of air. A nest, packed lint, or a stuck flap can trap heat even when the lint screen looks clean.

  3. Reduce the load size

A packed drum can block airflow inside the dryer. The load should have room to tumble, roughly no more than about two-thirds full. Let the dryer cool for 30 minutes, then try a smaller load.

  4. Power reset after airflow checks

Unplug the dryer or turn off its breaker for a few minutes after the lint and vent checks. Then run a short Time Dry cycle on low heat with the drum empty. If HC returns within a few minutes, stop using the dryer until it’s tested.

  5. Watch for the “scorching drum” clue

If the dryer throws HC fast and the drum feels extremely hot when you open the door, the heater may be staying on when it shouldn’t. That points to a grounded heating element or a stuck heater relay. Those are technician-level electrical checks.

  6. For electric dryers with weak heat

In some cases HC can show when an electric dryer isn’t getting proper supply voltage. Make sure it is plugged into its proper outlet with no extension cord. If heat is weak or odd electrical symptoms show up, have an electrician check the supply.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Exhaust vent systemA technician checks airflow at the dryer outlet and at the exterior hood, then compares the result with the vent connected and disconnected. A dryer that runs normally with the vent removed, then trips HC when reconnected, has a vent restriction outside the machine.
Heating elementWith power disconnected, the element is checked for continuity from each element terminal to the metal heater housing. It should read open, or infinity, to the housing; any reading to the chassis, such as a few ohms, means the coil is grounded and can heat when it shouldn’t.
ThermistorThe thermistor is checked in resistance mode at room temperature. Around 70 to 75°F it should be about 10 kΩ, and in the 50°F range it may be about 20 kΩ; a bad sensor can read out of range or fail to change smoothly as temperature changes.
Main control board heater relayIf airflow, element, and thermistor tests pass, the technician checks whether the heater relay is stuck closed. On electric models, a stuck relay can keep sending 240V to the heat circuit; on gas models the heat circuit may keep seeing 120V when the board should have stopped the call for heat.
High-limit thermostatThe high-limit thermostat is checked after an overheat event because it sits in the heater air path. A tripped or failed-open thermostat can point back to poor airflow, while heat that continues past normal cycling points the diagnosis back to a grounded element or relay fault.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Samsung dryer HC code?

Yes, you can unplug the dryer or turn off the breaker for a few minutes. That only clears the control. If the dryer is still overheating, HC will come back.

Is it safe to keep running the dryer with HC?

No. HC is an overheat or heater-control warning. Stop the cycle, clean the lint screen and vent path, then call a repair company if the code returns.

Why does HC show if the dryer doesn’t feel hot?

A bad thermistor can report the wrong temperature. On electric dryers, low supply voltage can also create odd heating behavior. A technician can separate a sensor fault from a power or control fault.

Does HC mean the heating element is bad?

Sometimes. A Samsung element coil can sag and touch the metal heater housing, which lets it heat outside normal control. Airflow trouble is still the first thing to check.

Is HC different on gas and electric Samsung dryers?

The display code means a heating fault on both. Electric models are more likely to be checked for a grounded element or 240V supply issue, while gas models add burner and ignition checks if the heat circuit won’t act normally.
