Samsung dryer HE code: what it means and what to check

Your Samsung dryer may stop after a few minutes, flash HE or hE, and feel hotter than normal inside the drum. This page explains the usual airflow checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the code comes back.

Straight answer

The Samsung dryer HE code means the dryer thinks it is overheating. The single most common cause is trapped heat from a clogged lint screen or restricted exhaust vent.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Stop the cycle and let the dryer cool

If the drum feels very hot, leave the door open and give the dryer time to cool before touching the lint area or vent. Don’t keep restarting it while the code is showing.

  2. Clean the lint screen, then wash it

Pull the lint screen and remove lint by hand. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen with warm water and a little dish soap because softener film can block air even when the screen looks clean.

  3. Check airflow at the outside vent hood

Run the dryer on a heat cycle for a short test and look at the outside hood. The flap should open with a steady air push; a weak push, stuck flap, lint mat, or bird nest points to a vent problem.

  4. Inspect the flexible vent behind the dryer

Unplug the dryer first. Look for a crushed hose, too many bends, or a loose connection packed with lint, then put it back without smashing it behind the dryer.

  5. Try a short reset after cleaning

After the lint screen and vent path are clear, unplug the dryer for 5 minutes. If HE comes back right away on a cold dryer, stop testing cycles and have the temperature circuit checked.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Exhaust vent and blower airflowA technician verifies strong airflow at the outlet, checks the blower path for lint, and may run Samsung’s vent blockage test where supported. C80 means about 80 percent restricted, while C90 means over 90 percent restricted.
Thermistor, DC32-00007A on many modelsWith power disconnected, the thermistor is read at the two terminals. A good room-temperature reading is about 10,000 ohms; readings around 100 to 112 ohms can make the control think the dryer is already overheated.
Thermal fuseThe fuse is checked for continuity with the dryer unplugged. No continuity means it opened from an overheat event, and the vent restriction or heat source that caused it has to be fixed before replacement.
Heating elementThe element is inspected for a sagged coil touching the metal heater box. A technician also checks continuity from the element terminal to the metal case; any continuity there means the element is grounded and can heat when it shouldn’t.
Main control board heat relayThe dryer is tested on Air Fluff or another no-heat setting. If the heater is powered when the control is calling for no heat, the relay on the board may be stuck closed.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Samsung dryer HE code?

You can unplug the dryer for 5 minutes after cleaning the lint screen and vent. A reset only clears the display; it won’t fix trapped heat, a bad thermistor, or a stuck heat relay.

Why does HE show up right after I press Start?

When HE appears in the first minute on a cold dryer, the thermistor is a common suspect. It sits on the blower duct, which is the part many owners miss when they only replace parts on the heater box.

Is HE the same as HC on a Samsung dryer?

Samsung groups hE, HC, HC4, and 1 HC as heating errors. They point to overheating or a heat-control fault, so the same airflow and temperature-sensor checks apply.

Should I keep running the dryer if clothes are still drying?

No. HE means the dryer is seeing an overheat condition, and repeated restarts can trip safety fuses or damage the heater area.

Could this be a house power problem?

On electric Samsung dryers, incorrect voltage or power cord issues can cause heat complaints. A homeowner can confirm the dryer is on its own proper outlet, but live voltage checks should be left to an electrician or appliance technician.

Still showing the problem after the checks?
