Samsung dryer not drying: what it means and what to check first

Your Samsung dryer may run a full cycle and still leave towels damp, or it may tumble with no heat at all. This page helps you sort airflow problems from heat failures, then shows what a technician tests when the simple checks don't solve it.

Straight answer

A Samsung dryer not drying means it has lost heat, lost airflow, or is ending the cycle before the clothes are actually dry. The most common cause is a restricted exhaust vent or lint path, especially when the drum still gets warm.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check whether it heats at all

Set the dryer to Time Dry, turn Eco Dry off, start it empty, then open the door after about 30 seconds and feel inside. If there is any warmth, the heat circuit is probably working and airflow becomes the main suspect.

  2. Turn off Eco Dry and try Time Dry

Eco Dry can run part of the cycle with reduced heat, and on some models it turns on during common cycles. Use Time Dry with medium or high heat for a test load, because this bypasses a lot of sensor-cycle confusion.

  3. Clean the lint screen and the slot

Pull the lint filter and clean it before the next test. If water beads up on the screen when you rinse it at the sink, wash the mesh with mild soap, since softener film can block airflow even when the screen looks clean.

  4. Check the vent behind the dryer and outside

Look for a crushed foil hose, a tight bend behind the machine, or an outside flap that barely opens while the dryer runs. Rear-vent Samsung dryers often get pushed back just far enough to pinch the short duct at the outlet.

  5. Reset both breaker legs on an electric dryer

Turn the dryer breaker fully off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. An electric dryer can run the motor and display on one power leg, yet lack the full power needed for heat.

  6. Run the Samsung vent blockage test if your model has it

With the drum cool and empty, try Adjust Time Up plus Dry Level until Ins or In appears, then hold Start/Pause. Results such as CLg, Cg, C80, or C90 point to a vent restriction, while 0 or End means the duct test passed.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Exhaust vent and lint pathA technician checks outlet airflow, the transition duct, the wall duct, the outside hood, and lint buildup in the filter housing or blower area. If the dryer heats better with the vent removed on an electric model for a very short test, the restriction is in the duct system rather than the heater.
Thermal fuses and high-limit thermostatWith power off, each fuse and the high-limit thermostat is tested for continuity at the terminals. A no-continuity reading means the part is open and must be replaced, but the overheating cause still has to be found before the dryer is returned to service.
Heating elementThe element is checked for continuity, then checked from each element terminal to the metal heater housing to see if the coil is grounded. A normal Samsung electric element is about 8 to 10 ohms in the cited test data, while OL, no continuity, or continuity to the case points to a bad element.
ThermistorThe thermistor is tested by resistance, not by a simple continuity beep. One Samsung thermistor spec is just over 10k ohms at room temperature, and another service check states around 10k ohms at 77°F with about a 10 percent range.
Main PCB heater relayA technician may test the heater relay output during a heated cycle. One service check expects 0 VAC across the relay contacts when the relay is closed; a 240 VAC reading there indicates the relay is staying open and the control has failed.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Samsung dryer that isn't drying?

You can reset power by turning the breaker off for 30 seconds, then turning it back on. If an electric dryer starts heating after that, one breaker leg may have been tripped.

Why does my Samsung dryer get hot but clothes stay wet?

That usually points to poor airflow. The heat is being made, but damp air can't leave through the lint path, hose, wall duct, or outside hood.

Can Eco Dry make it seem like the dryer is broken?

Yes. Eco Dry can lower heat during parts of the cycle, so a load may take longer or feel like it isn't drying the way it used to.

Why does Sensor Dry stop with wet clothes still inside?

Dirty moisture sensor bars can tell the control that the load is dry too soon. The bars are usually near the lint filter housing and can be wiped with mild soap and a soft cloth.

Should I keep using the dryer if it takes two cycles?

Use caution. A dryer that takes two cycles often has restricted venting, and that same restriction can overheat fuses, thermostats, or the element.
