Samsung dryer not turning: what it means and what to check

Your Samsung dryer powers up, the lights work, or you may hear a hum, but the drum won’t turn. This page covers the quick checks you can do from the front of the dryer, then what a technician tests inside the machine.

Straight answer

A Samsung dryer not turning means the control has started or is trying to start a cycle, but the drum drive circuit or rotating parts are stopped. The most common repair cause is a broken drive belt that lets the idler arm hit the broken-belt switch, cutting power to the motor.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the display for a code or blinking lights

If the panel shows an error code, handle that first. A door error, stuck button, or lock icon can stop the dryer before the drum ever moves.

  2. Turn off Child Lock

Child Lock can keep the Start button from working. Look for a baby icon or a lock with a smiley face, then press and hold the labeled buttons for 3 seconds or more, based on your model’s panel.

  3. Use Samsung’s Time Dry start test

Select Time Dry, press and hold Start, then watch the timer. If it starts at 40 and drops to 39 after a minute, the cycle did start, so a non-turning drum points toward an internal repair.

  4. Reset power for 60 seconds

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. This can clear a control lockup, but it won’t fix a broken belt, failed switch, jammed blower wheel, or bad motor.

  5. Listen for a hum

A hum followed by the dryer stopping often means the motor is trying to run against a jam, or the motor can’t start under load. Stop trying repeated starts, since that can overheat the motor.

  6. Check the lint screen area

Make sure the lint screen is installed and seated. A missing lint screen can let small clothing get pulled into the blower wheel, and a shirt in that wheel can lock the motor while the control still lights up.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drive belt and broken-belt switchWith power off, the technician checks that the belt is tight around the drum and that the idler arm is holding the broken-belt switch button out. The switch should read about 0.1 ohm with the button out and open when the button is pressed, which is exactly what happens when the belt breaks and the idler drops.
Motor circuit at the main controlFrom the control area, the motor circuit can be checked between the yellow neutral wire and the brown motor feed wire. About 2 ohms means the motor winding path, broken-belt switch, and blower housing thermal cutoff are closed; an open reading sends the tech to those parts one by one.
Blower wheelIf the dryer hums, buzzes, or shuts down after trying to start, the tech removes the front parts and looks at the blower wheel. A sock, shirt, heavy lint pack, or broken wheel can lock the motor even when the belt is still on the drum.
Blower housing thermal cutoffThe thermal cutoff on the blower housing is tested with its wires removed. It should show continuity or resistance from terminal to terminal; an open or OL reading means the cutoff has opened and the motor circuit is broken.
Drive motor and control relayAt the motor, the start winding test is between the yellow and brown wires on motor leads 5 and 4, with a good reading around 1.7 to 2 ohms on the cited Samsung layout. If the motor circuit reads good from the board and the dryer still won’t run when Start is pressed, the motor relay on the control board is the suspect.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Samsung dryer that won’t turn?

Yes. Unplug it or switch off the breaker for 60 seconds, then try Time Dry again. If the timer counts down and the drum still doesn’t move, the reset did its job and the fault is inside the dryer.

Why does my Samsung dryer hum but not spin?

A hum usually means the motor is getting power and trying to start. Common causes are a jammed blower wheel, a seized motor, or a motor start winding problem.

Is a broken belt visible without taking the dryer apart?

Usually no. On many Samsung dryers, the belt is checked from inside the cabinet, and the broken-belt switch is down by the idler arm. A technician can confirm it quickly once the dryer is opened.

Could Child Lock make it look like the dryer is broken?

Yes. Child Lock can stop the Start button from working while the panel still responds. If the lock icon is lit, turn it off before booking service.

Should I use the warranty before opening the dryer?

Yes. If the dryer may still be covered, check your paperwork or Samsung account before any disassembly. Opening panels or replacing parts can affect a claim.
