Samsung dryer not turning on: why it happens and what to do

Your Samsung dryer may be totally blank, or it may light up, click, count down, and still refuse to spin. This guide helps you split a power problem from a start problem so you know what to check before calling a repair company.

Straight answer

A Samsung dryer not turning on means the control is either not getting proper power, or the dryer has power but a lock, door switch, fuse, belt path, motor, or control fault is stopping the start command. The most common cause to rule out first is a power or setting issue, especially a tripped paired breaker on an electric dryer or Child Lock on the panel.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check whether the display is dead or just won't start

If the panel is blank, start with power. Make sure the cord is fully seated, then reset the dryer breaker by turning it off and back on. On an electric dryer, the paired breaker can lose one side of the 240 volt supply even when the handle doesn't look tripped.

  2. Reset the control

Unplug the dryer or turn off the dryer breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. This can clear a stuck control state, but it won't fix a blown fuse, failed switch, broken belt, or bad motor.

  3. Turn off Child Lock and Delay Start

Child Lock can make the Start button act dead. Look for a baby icon or a lock face icon, then press and hold the labeled button pair for at least 3 seconds. If Delay Start is active, turn the dryer off, then back on.

  4. Close the door firmly

A Samsung dryer won't start if the door switch doesn't see the door as closed. Remove laundry caught at the edge, push the door until it latches, and look for a door related code or blinking lights.

  5. Run the Time Dry countdown test

Select Time Dry, then press and hold Start long enough for the command to take, often 2 to 5 seconds. If the display starts at 40 minutes, it should drop to 39 after a minute. If the timer counts down but the drum doesn't turn, Samsung treats that as a repair issue in most cases.

  6. Turn the drum by hand with the door open

The drum should have some belt drag. If it turns with very little resistance and the dryer only clicks when you press Start, the belt may be off because the idler pulley wore out. Samsung idler wheels can shed small plastic pieces when they seize.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Incoming power and terminal blockA technician checks voltage at the receptacle or terminal block. An electric dryer should have about 220 to 240 VAC across the two line legs. If one leg is missing, the panel may act odd or the dryer may stay dead even though the breaker handle looks normal.
Door switch and latchWith power disconnected, the door switch is checked for continuity while the door is closed, then open. A switch that doesn't change state, a cracked latch, or a door that won't seat squarely will stop the start circuit.
Belt and idler pulleyThe front is opened and the belt path is inspected. A loose belt, an idler wheel that won't turn smoothly, or plastic debris near the pulley points to a failed idler that let the belt come off the drum.
Thermal fuseWith one wire removed, the fuse is checked for continuity. No continuity means the fuse is open. The vent path should be checked too, because restricted airflow can overheat the dryer and open the fuse.
Start switch and drive motorThe start switch is checked for continuity only while the Start button is pressed. For the motor, a technician checks continuity between the red wire at terminal 1 and the red wire at terminal 2 while pulling the motor disc toward the front; no continuity points to a failed motor.

Common questions about appliance repair

Is there a reset button on a Samsung dryer?

Most Samsung dryers don't have a separate reset button for this fault. Unplug it or turn the dryer breaker off for 60 seconds, then restore power.

Why does my Samsung dryer light up but not start?

Start with Child Lock, Delay Start, the door latch, and the Time Dry countdown test. If the timer counts down and the drum still doesn't move, the likely repair is in the belt and idler pulley, door switch, fuse, motor, or control.

Why is my Samsung dryer completely dead?

A blank panel usually points to lost power, a tripped paired breaker on an electric model, a bad cord or terminal block, or a failed control. A technician can confirm the supply before parts are replaced.

Can a broken belt keep a Samsung dryer from starting?

Yes. If the belt comes off, many dryers won't run the motor circuit normally. A worn idler pulley is a common reason the belt loses tension.

Should I check the vent if the dryer won't start?

Yes, especially if it stopped after running hot or taking too long to dry. A clogged vent can overheat the dryer and open the thermal fuse, which can stop operation.
