Whirlpool oven PF code: what it means and how to fix it

You may see PF on the display after an outage, a breaker trip, or a quick power blink. Sometimes the oven still shows the clock, yet the touch panel won't respond or the oven won't start. This page covers the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when PF won't clear.

What the display shows
Straight answer

A Whirlpool oven PF code means the control detected a power failure or power loss event. The most common cause is a brief power interruption to the electronic oven control, often after an outage or breaker trip.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Press Cancel or Clear

Press the Cancel, Clear, or Off pad once. On many Whirlpool ovens this clears PF, though some models also need the time of day set again.

  2. Reset power at the breaker

Turn the oven or range breaker off for one minute, then turn it back on. If PF appears after power returns, press Cancel or Off and set the clock if needed. If PF won't clear or returns after that, call for service.

  3. Set the clock

If the time is flashing after PF clears, set the clock before using timed cooking. For bake or broil, follow the prompt on the display and your owner's manual.

  4. Look for LOC or Lock

If the display says LOC or Lock instead of PF, the control lock is on. Use the button sequence in the owner's manual, often a press-and-hold on Start or Control Lock, to unlock the panel.

  5. Stop if the clock works but the oven won't heat

On an electric range, a display can light even when the oven is missing part of its supply power. Don't meter the outlet yourself; that test belongs to a technician or electrician.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a oven12
  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Incoming oven or range powerAt the receptacle, terminal block, or junction connection, a technician checks for the supply listed on the model tech sheet. On many electric Whirlpool ranges that means 240 VAC between L1 and L2 and 120 VAC from each line to neutral; one lost leg can leave the clock lit while bake and broil won't heat.
Electronic oven control, clock, or ERCAfter supply power is confirmed, the technician verifies that voltage reaches the control connector, then inspects the board for outage or spike damage. A failed clock may keep PF on the display, ignore keypad input, or fail to send bake or broil output after reset.
Keypad or touch panelIf the display lights but button presses do nothing, the technician reseats the ribbon or keypad connector, then checks key response. F2-style keypad faults, a stuck key, or a shorted membrane point to the keypad; if the keypad passes, the clock remains suspect.
Oven temperature sensorIf an F3 sensor code or an over-temperature code appeared with the PF event, the sensor circuit is checked with power disconnected. Whirlpool tech sheets commonly list 1000 to 1200 ohms at room temperature, or about 1080 ohms at 70 degrees F; an open, shorted, or far-off reading points to the sensor or wiring.
Thermal fuse or thermal cutoffWhen the clock works but the oven stays dead after the control was reset or replaced, the technician checks the cutoff in the oven circuit for continuity with power disconnected. An open cutoff can stop oven operation even after PF clears.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a Whirlpool oven PF code?

Press Cancel, Clear, or Off. If PF returns, turn the oven breaker off for one minute, turn it back on, then clear PF again and watch the display for one minute.

Why does my Whirlpool oven show PF after an outage?

PF means the control noticed a loss of power. A quick outage, breaker trip, voltage drop, or power spike can cause it.

Can the surface elements work while the oven won't after PF?

Yes. The cooktop and oven use different circuits and controls. If the display is lit but bake and broil won't heat, a technician still checks supply power and the terminal block before replacing oven parts.

Does PF mean the control board is bad?

No. Clear the code and reset power first. If PF won't clear, comes back, or the keys are dead, a technician will test supply power before condemning the clock or ERC.

Is a PF code covered by warranty?

It depends on the model age, warranty terms, and what failed. Check your paperwork before approving a paid repair, especially if the oven is still fairly new.
