Kenmore washer code OE: what it means and what to check
A Kenmore washer showing OE usually stops with water still in the tub, then it may refuse to spin. On many Kenmore Elite and 796 models, this is the same drain fault used on LG-built washers. This page shows what to check safely first, then what a technician tests if the code comes back.

Kenmore washer code OE means the washer did not drain fast enough, so it may stop with water still in the tub and skip the spin. On many LG-built front-load Kenmore and Kenmore Elite models, that drain check is about 10 minutes. A common cause on models with a lower filter is a clogged drain pump filter, often called the coin trap, packed with lint, hair, coins, or a small sock.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Confirm the code is OE
OE is a drain code. UE is different and points to an out-of-balance spin problem, so read the display carefully before taking anything apart.
- Drain and clean the coin trap filter
Unplug the washer and let hot water cool if needed. Open the small lower access door if your model has one, pull out the little drain hose, and empty the water into a shallow pan. Then twist out the filter and clean out lint, hair, coins, buttons, and sock pieces. This is a common fix named in the service help for this fault.
- Check the drain hose you can see
Look behind the washer for a kinked, crushed, or pinched drain hose. Also check that the house drain or laundry sink is not backing up while the washer tries to drain.
- Look through the filter opening
With power unplugged and the filter removed, use a flashlight to look for a button, hair pin, or string caught near the pump inlet. Do not force the pump impeller with your fingers or tools.
- Run drain and spin after reassembly
Put the filter cap back tight, close the small drain hose cap, and run drain and spin. If you hear the pump hum but water barely moves, the pump may be jammed or weak.
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
- Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Boards fail earlier in hot rooms
Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Can I reset a Kenmore washer code OE?
You can unplug the washer for a few minutes, then run drain and spin. If the water still does not leave the tub, the reset did not fix the fault.
Is OE the same as UE on a Kenmore Elite washer?
No. OE is a drain fault, while UE is a load balance or spin fault. If the drum is full of water, treat it as a drain problem first.
Does this apply to Kenmore 796 washers?
Yes, many Kenmore models starting with 796 were built by LG and use this OE drain-code logic. The lower access door, small drain hose, and coin trap layout are common on those front-load machines.
Will cleaning the filter always clear the OE code?
It clears many OE calls because the coin trap is the common clog point. If the filter is clean and the washer still barely pumps water out, the drain pump or a hidden hose blockage is next.
Can I keep running the washer with OE showing?
It's better to stop and drain it. Repeated attempts can leave dirty water in the drum and may overwork a weak drain pump.
