Kenmore washer code UE: what it means and what to check

Your Kenmore washer is trying to spin, then it may pause with uE or stop with UE and leave the load wet. This page shows the safe checks to try first, then the parts a technician looks at when the code keeps coming back.

What the display shows
Straight answer

Kenmore washer code UE means the washer sensed an unbalanced load during spin and stopped to keep the tub from shaking too hard. A common cause is a load the machine can't spread out, especially one heavy item, a tangled sheet, or a very small load.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Pause the washer and spread the load out

Press Start/Pause and wait for the lid or door to unlock. Untangle sheets, jeans, towels, or sweatshirts that have rolled into one heavy ball. Restart the spin cycle after the load is spread around the basket.

  2. Add items to a tiny load

A single towel, one pair of jeans, or a small handful of clothes can trigger UE because the washer can't balance the weight. Add a few similar items, then run drain and spin again.

  3. Take items out of an overfilled tub

If the basket is packed tight, the washer can't shift the clothes during the balance check. Remove some items, load the rest loosely, then restart the cycle.

  4. Check that the washer doesn't rock

Press down kitty-corner on the washer cabinet. If it rocks, adjust the leveling legs until all four feet sit firmly on the floor, then tighten the leg lock nuts.

  5. Power it down for more than 5 minutes

Unplug the washer or turn off the breaker for more than 5 minutes, then restore power. This can clear a control hiccup, especially when the basket looks steady yet the code appears during spin.

Hot and cold hoses connect at the back, with small screens inside the valve inlets. The lid lock sits at the back of the lid opening. If the drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe, water can siphon out while it fills.
Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Suspension rods or damper shocksA technician pushes down on the empty basket and watches the rebound. Good suspension comes back up in a controlled way; weak rods or shocks let the basket bounce several times or sit off-center.
Suspension springsOn front-load models, the tech removes the upper access area and checks for a broken, stretched, or unhooked spring. A tub hanging low on one side or rubbing the cabinet is a visual fail.
Stator hall sensor on 796 direct-drive modelsIf a 796 direct-drive Kenmore shows UE on an empty spin or never reads basket motion correctly, the tech checks the hall sensor and wiring at the stator. A failed sensor can make the control misread basket speed or off-balance movement.
Electronic control boardFor a UE code that appears with a level washer, controlled suspension, and normal speed feedback, the tech checks the control side last. A bad board can misread a stable basket as an out-of-balance load.
Gearcase or tub supportA tech listens during spin and checks for rough bearing noise, grinding, or a jet-like howl. Rust around the shaft area or a tub that can't stay centered points to a larger mechanical repair.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Kenmore washer code UE?

Yes. Unplug the washer or turn off the breaker for more than 5 minutes, then try drain and spin. If the code comes right back, the washer is still seeing an imbalance or a failed spin-related part.

Is UE different from uE on a Kenmore washer?

They point to the same balance problem on many Kenmore 796 models, but they don't always mean the same stage. uE usually means the washer is trying to rebalance. UE means the rebalance try failed and the cycle has paused for help.

Why does my Kenmore washer only show UE on small loads?

Small loads are hard to balance because all the weight can sit on one side of the basket. Add a few similar items so the washer has enough weight to spread around.

What if my Kenmore washer shows UE with no clothes in it?

That usually moves the problem away from laundry loading. A technician will check suspension movement, model-specific spin feedback such as a hall sensor and wiring, and the control board.

Do front-load and top-load Kenmore washers use the same UE repair?

The first checks are the same: load balance and leveling. After that, front-load models often point to shocks or springs, while many top-load models point to suspension rods or spin-sensing parts.
