bE code on LG dishwasher: what it means and what to check
Your LG dishwasher may stop mid-cycle and show bE, BE, or something that looks like 6E on the display. This page explains the common suds-related cause, the safe cleanup steps, and what a technician checks if the code keeps coming back.

The bE code on an LG dishwasher means the machine has detected too many bubbles in the tub, a condition that can push foam or water out of the door. The most common cause is dish soap, liquid hand-washing soap, or too much sudsy dishwasher detergent left in the tub.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Stop using any hand dish soap
Use only detergent made for automatic dishwashers, such as powder or a tablet. Regular kitchen soap, even a small amount left on pre-rinsed dishes, can foam enough to trigger bE.
- Run it empty with no detergent
Take out the dishes and start a cycle with the detergent cup empty. If foam is still present and bE returns, the dishwasher is reacting to soap residue already in the tub.
- Use the milk cleanup method
Set the rinse aid level to L0, place a bowl with 200 to 300 mL of milk in the middle of the upper rack, then run a Normal cycle with no detergent. If foam remains, repeat the same step, then set the rinse aid level back where it was.
- Cut back on detergent
If bE shows up only once in a while, reduce the detergent amount or switch away from a detergent that makes heavy suds. Some eco-type detergents can foam more depending on the food soil on the dishes.
- Look for an installation or level problem
If the dishwasher was just installed or moved, check whether it rocks, leans, or lets racks roll on their own. LG lists poor leveling as another bE trigger, so an installer or technician may need to level the feet behind the toe kick.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Can I reset an LG dishwasher after a bE code?
You can turn power off for one to two minutes, then restart a cycle. If suds are still in the tub, the code will usually come back because the cause is still there.
Is BE the same as bE on an LG dishwasher?
Yes. LG lists this as bE, which stands for bubble error, though the display may make the letters look slightly different.
Can I use regular dish soap in an LG dishwasher once?
No. Regular dish soap makes heavy foam in a dishwasher and can trigger bE, even if it was only on dishes that were prewashed by hand.
Why does LG say to put milk in the dishwasher?
LG’s suds cleanup step uses a bowl of 200 to 300 mL of milk on the upper rack with no detergent in the cup. It helps knock down foam left from the wrong soap or too much detergent.
Does a bE code mean the pump is bad?
Usually, no. Start with suds, detergent type, rinse aid, and leveling; a technician should test parts only if bE returns with a clean, level machine.
