LG dishwasher LE code: what it means and what to check

An LG dishwasher with an LE code often drains, fills, then stops when the wash motor should start. You may hear a short hum or a dull “ugh” sound from the bottom of the tub. This page shows the safe checks to try first, then the motor tests a technician uses when the code comes back.

Straight answer

The LG dishwasher LE code means the control sees a cleaning motor problem, usually a locked or stalled circulation wash motor. The most commonly reported cause is a wiring or connector fault in the wash motor circuit, though glass or debris in the impeller can cause the same code.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the control

Turn the dishwasher off at the breaker or unplug it if the plug is easy to reach, then wait 10 to 15 minutes. Restore power and start a short cycle. This only clears a temporary control glitch, so a returning LE code still needs more checks.

  2. Listen to when it fails

Start a rinse or quick cycle and listen from the front. If it drains first, fills, then hums when the wash motor should run, the problem is in the circulation side rather than a normal drain cycle. That detail helps a technician avoid chasing the wrong pump.

  3. Check loading and spray arms

Open the door, pull out the racks, and make sure no pan handle, utensil, or tall dish is blocking a spray arm. Spin each arm by hand. A blocked arm can load the wash system and may trigger a motor fault on some units.

  4. Look for suds or wrong soap

If dish soap was used, or the tub is full of foam, stop the cycle and let the suds settle. Run a rinse cycle after the foam is gone, using only dishwasher detergent later. Heavy suds can make the wash motor work too hard.

  5. Clean the filter and check for visible debris

Let the tub cool before touching the filter area. Remove the lower rack, twist out the filter, rinse the filter parts, then look in the sump for visible glass, bone, labels, or other debris. Use care with sharp pieces, since small glass in the pump vanes is a real LE-code find.

  6. Think about recent service or movement

If the LE code started right after a drain pump repair, installation work, or the dishwasher was pulled from the cabinet, a loose connector under the unit becomes more likely. Don’t open the lower panels for this check. Tell the repair company what changed before the code appeared.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Wash motor wiring and connectorsWith power off, the technician pulls the dishwasher as needed and checks the motor plug, board connector, backed-out pins, rubbed wiring, and any heat-darkened terminal at the motor. Continuity is checked end to end through the motor circuit; an open conductor or loose connector can set LE even when the motor itself is good.
Circulation wash motorThe motor windings are isolated and checked with a meter against the model tech sheet. An open winding, shorted winding, or motor that only hums when wash is commanded points to a bad wash motor or a locked rotor.
Sump assembly and impellerThe technician checks the pump vanes, rotor, and blade area for glass, seeds, broken plastic, or a seized feel. A rotor that won’t turn smoothly, a cracked blade, or debris wedged in the vanes can stall the cleaning motor and bring up LE.
Main control boardDuring a wash command or diagnostic step, the technician checks whether the board sends output to the wash motor connector. Good wiring and a good motor with no board output points back to the main PCB.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG dishwasher LE code?

Yes. Turn power off at the breaker or unplug it, wait 10 to 15 minutes, then restart a short cycle. If LE returns, the control is still seeing a motor circuit fault.

Is the LG dishwasher LE code a drain pump problem?

LE points to the cleaning motor or circulation wash motor. OE is the code tied to draining, though a recent drain pump repair can disturb wiring and lead to an LE code afterward.

Can I keep using the dishwasher with LE showing?

It’s better to stop. If the motor is locked or the impeller is jammed, repeated starts can strain the motor and control parts.

Is the motor covered by warranty?

Some LG dishwasher motors have a longer parts warranty than other electronics. Check your model paperwork or LG account before replacing the motor, especially if the dishwasher is only a few years old.

What if opening and closing the door clears it once?

A one-time pause can be a control glitch or door interruption. If the code comes back at the wash-motor start point, treat it as a motor circuit fault and have it tested.
