LG dishwasher not draining: what it means and what to check

An LG dishwasher that leaves dirty water in the tub may also stop early and show OE, which is LG's drain error. This page walks through the safe checks at the tub and sink, then explains what a technician tests when the clog checks don't solve it.

Straight answer

An LG dishwasher not draining means the control sees water staying in the tub when it should have pumped out, often with an OE error. The most common cause is a blocked drain path, usually food debris in the filter, air gap, disposal inlet, or drain hose.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Clean the tub filter

Turn the dishwasher off, pull the lower rack, and remove loose food from the sump area. Twist the mesh filter counterclockwise, rinse it under running water, brush it clean, then lock it back in until it clicks.

  2. Check the hose under the sink

Open the sink cabinet and look for the white or gray dishwasher drain hose. Move bottles or bins that are crushing it, then straighten any sharp bend you can reach without pulling the dishwasher out.

  3. Clean the air gap, if you have one

If there is a small cap on the sink or counter near the faucet, lift the cover with the dishwasher off. Clear the small opening with a brush or toothpick, because food can pack in there and send water back to the tub.

  4. Check the disposal connection after a new install

If the dishwasher was just installed or a garbage disposal was replaced, the disposal knockout plug may still be in place. Turn off power to the disposal before anyone inspects that inlet, and don't put fingers into the disposal opening.

  5. Run a drain-only cycle

On many LG dishwashers, holding Start for about 3 seconds starts cancel and drain. If the pump runs and water leaves through the sink drain, the machine may be clear; if it hums, gurgles, or stops with OE again, move to repair testing.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain hose, air gap, and disposal inletA technician disconnects the hose at the sink connection and checks both directions for food plugs, kinks, or a blocked Y fitting. A very common tell is a hose that drains into a bucket but fails when reconnected under the sink, which points back to the disposal inlet, air gap, or branch tailpiece.
Drain pumpDuring cancel and drain, the tech verifies that the pump is being powered and that the impeller is able to turn. With power removed, the pump can be checked at its terminals for continuity on Rx1, with zero or near-zero resistance expected on the referenced LG repair procedure; any reading to the metal housing is a failed ground test.
Pump housing and impeller areaWith the pump removed, the tech looks for glass, seeds, labels, or hard food lodged in the inlet or outlet. A pump that has power and a clear outlet but only buzzes, stalls, or has a damaged impeller gets replaced.
Check valve flapper or piston and nut assemblyOn models that use these parts, the flapper must seal one way and open the other. The piston should move up and down without sticking, then seal tightly in the down position; a worn seal lets dirty water return to the tub after the pump shuts off.
Timer or control outputIf the pump and drain path test good, the tech checks the wiring diagram for the drain circuit and tests the control or timer contacts used in drain. Mechanical timer contacts may be checked for resistance using the model sheet, because the expected reading varies by model.

Common questions about appliance repair

Does OE always mean the drain pump is bad?

No. OE means the dishwasher didn't drain properly, and the first checks are the filter, hose, air gap, and disposal connection. A pump becomes more likely after the drain path is clear.

Can I reset an LG dishwasher that won't drain?

You can cancel and drain by holding Start for about 3 seconds on many LG models. A reset may clear the display, but it won't remove a clog or fix a weak pump.

Why did this start after a new garbage disposal was installed?

The disposal knockout plug may still be blocking the dishwasher inlet. That small plastic plug has to be removed before the dishwasher hose can drain through the disposal.

What if the filter is clean and the hose isn't kinked?

Check the air gap or the sink drain connection next, because debris often sits right where the dishwasher hose enters the plumbing. If that area is clear, a technician should test the drain pump and check valve parts.

Is standing water in an LG dishwasher normal?

A small amount down in the sump can be normal on some dishwashers. Water covering the filter area or sitting in the tub after a cycle points to a drain problem.
