NE LG dishwasher code: what it means and what to check

Your LG dishwasher may show nE, finish poorly, or leave grit on dishes because water isn't being sent to the right spray arm at the right time. This page shows the safe checks to try first, then the parts a technician tests when the code comes back.

Straight answer

The NE LG dishwasher code means the vario pump or diverter system isn't reaching the position the control board expects. The most common cause is debris jammed in the diverter disk under the lower spray arm.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the dishwasher once

Turn the dishwasher off at the breaker or unplug it if the plug is easy to reach, then wait 3 to 5 minutes. Restore power and start a short cycle. If nE returns, the dishwasher has a real diverter fault instead of a one-time stall.

  2. Check the lower spray arm area

Pull out the lower rack, then lift or twist off the lower spray arm, depending on your model. Shine a light at the round diverter disk in the center of the sump. Toothpicks, glass bits, bones, and labels can wedge in there.

  3. Remove visible debris from the diverter disk

With power off, pick out anything you can see using tweezers or needle-nose pliers. Don't force the disk. One source reports this debris check clears about 60% of nE calls, especially when the code appeared after a broken dish or heavy food load.

  4. Look for a loose or damaged diverter seal

Check the rubber seal around the diverter cover area if it's visible from inside the tub. A seal that popped out or split can lower wash pressure, so the spray arms may move poorly even though the motor tries to work.

  5. Clean the filter if dishes have residue

A dirty filter usually causes drain or wash quality complaints, not nE by itself. Still, if residue is on the dishes, remove the filter, rinse the fine screen, and lock it back in place until it clicks.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Diverter disk and sump camThe tech removes the lower spray arm and checks whether the disk is jammed by glass, food debris, mineral scale, or a broken plastic drive piece. A good disk turns without binding when the motor drives it. A failed one may sit cocked, grind, or stay in one water path.
Vario motor, diverter motorWith power disconnected and the motor unplugged, the motor winding is checked for resistance. One service source gives 2,700 to 4,000 ohms as the expected range. An open reading or a reading far outside that range points to a bad motor.
Position microswitchThe switch tells the board where the diverter is sitting. A tech checks the switch signal while moving the actuator. One source gives about 5 VDC when open and 0 VDC when closed. No change, corrosion on the switch, or a loose switch mount can set nE even when the motor turns.
Wiring from sump to main PCBThe lower connector is inspected for backed-out pins, green corrosion, rubbed insulation, or heat marks. If the fault is intermittent, the tech will flex the wire loom while checking continuity from the motor plug back to the board connector.
Main control boardIf the motor and switch test good, the board output is checked during a diverter step in diagnostics. On XD series models, one source points to connector NA8 and the orange and brown wires for a 120 VAC check. No output at the right time suggests a board fault.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG dishwasher nE code?

Yes. Turn off power for 3 to 5 minutes, then restart a cycle. If the code returns, the control is still seeing a diverter position problem.

Is the filter causing the nE code?

Usually no. A clogged or stained filter can leave residue on dishes, but nE points to the vario pump or diverter system. Clean the filter anyway if dishes look gritty.

Can I run the dishwasher with the nE code showing?

It's better to stop using it until the fault is checked. The dishwasher may finish a cycle, but water may stay aimed at the wrong spray arm, so cleaning suffers and the wash system can strain.

Does nE mean the diverter motor is bad?

Often, yes, but it isn't the only cause. A jammed diverter disk, bad position switch, loose wiring, or a control board fault can trigger the same code.

Should I check warranty before repair?

Yes. If the dishwasher is still within LG's coverage period or covered through a retailer plan, check that first before replacing parts.
