LG dishwasher code IE: what it means and how to fix it

Your LG dishwasher starts, pauses, beeps, or shows IE while little or no water is entering the tub. This page walks through the safe water-supply checks first, then explains what a technician tests if the code comes back.

Straight answer

LG dishwasher code IE means the tub did not reach the water level the control expected during fill, often within 30 seconds to 10 minutes. The most common cause is restricted or shut-off water supply, especially a closed under-sink valve, kinked hose, or clogged inlet screen.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Make sure it says IE, not E1

On some displays, IE can look like 1E. LG treats IE as a water inlet error, while E1 points to a different problem on many models.

  2. Open the under-sink water valve

Look under the sink for the small valve that feeds the dishwasher. Turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then start a short cycle and listen for water entering after the drain at the start.

  3. Check the supply hose for a sharp bend

A dishwasher that was just installed, moved, or pushed back into the cabinet can pinch the fill hose. Straighten any kink you can see without pulling hard on the line.

  4. Check the home water supply

Run the kitchen faucet and another nearby faucet. LG lists the needed supply pressure as 20 to 80 psi, so weak flow at the sink can be enough to trigger IE.

  5. Clean the inlet screen if you can reach it safely

Turn power off at the breaker or unplug it, then close the under-sink supply valve. Remove the supply hose from the dishwasher inlet, pull the small plastic screen with its seal using small pliers, and rinse the screen with a soft brush under running water. Seat the gasket, reconnect by hand, then check for leaks.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Inlet screens clog quietly

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Water supply to dishwasherA technician checks flow at the supply line with the hose aimed into a bucket, or uses a pressure gauge at the line. LG calls for 20 to 80 psi; weak flow or pressure below that range points to plumbing, the shutoff valve, or a restricted hose.
Inlet valve screenThe screen at the hose connection is inspected for grit, rust, hard-water scale, or a gasket sitting crooked. A screen packed with debris can make the valve look bad even when the coil still works.
Water inlet valveAfter supply pressure is confirmed, the valve is checked during a fill call. A bad valve may hum and pass little water, stay shut with a clean screen, or fail to open even though the dishwasher is asking for fill.
Water-level sensor or float tankThe technician checks whether the water-level signal changes as water enters the side fill area or float tank. If water is present but the control still thinks the tub is low, the sensor, float area, or its plug becomes the focus.
Main control boardThis is a last-check part. If the supply is good, the valve tests good, and the control does not send a proper fill command to the valve, the board or the wire path to the valve is suspect.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG dishwasher code IE?

You can turn power off for a minute to clear the display. If the tub still does not fill, the code will come back because the control is seeing the same low-water condition.

Is IE the same as E1 on an LG dishwasher?

No. IE is a water inlet or low-fill code. E1 is a different code on many LG dishwashers, so read the display carefully because the I can look like a 1.

Can I keep running the dishwasher with IE showing?

Don’t keep restarting it if no water is entering. Cancel the cycle, shut it off, and check the supply valve, hose, and inlet screen first.

Does IE mean the water inlet valve is bad?

Sometimes. If the under-sink valve is open, the hose is clear, the inlet screen is clean, and pressure is in range, the inlet valve moves near the front of the repair list.

Why did IE appear right after installation?

The under-sink valve may still be closed, or the supply hose may be kinked behind the dishwasher. This is common after a move because the hose can fold as the unit is pushed into the cabinet.
