LG dishwasher code OE: what it means and how to fix it

Your LG dishwasher may stop with OE on the display, leave water in the bottom, or make a low pump sound without draining much water. This page walks through the homeowner checks first, then what a technician tests when the code keeps coming back.

Straight answer

LG dishwasher code OE means the machine has detected a drain problem, so water is staying in the tub longer than it should. The most common cause is food debris clogging the filter or drain path.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Clear loose food in the tub

Turn the dishwasher off, pull the lower rack, and remove any rice, labels, glass, bones, or soft food packed around the sump area. Rice and pasta can turn into a paste in the small drain path.

  2. Clean the bottom filter

On many LG models, turn the mesh filter counterclockwise, then lift out the mesh filter, upper stainless filter, and outer filter. Wash them with warm water and a soft brush, then lock them back in place before testing a cycle.

  3. Check the air gap if you have one

If there’s a small cap on the sink deck near the faucet, lift the cap and clear debris from the air gap. A blocked air gap can make water spit up at the sink or send drain water back toward the dishwasher.

  4. Check the disposal or sink drain connection

If a garbage disposer was installed recently, the dishwasher inlet plug may still be in place. Also check for grease or food at the hose connection under the sink, since that choke point can trigger OE even when the dishwasher pump is working.

  5. Look at the visible drain hose

Under the sink, make sure the hose is not kinked, pinched, or sagging full of water. After cleaning the filter and drain connection, run a Normal or Heavy cycle with no dishes and no detergent to flush the unit and test the drain.

Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain hose, air gap, and disposer inletRun cancel/drain and verify actual flow from the drain hose into a bucket or at the sink connection. If the pump runs or pulses but water only moves with the hose held low, the tech looks for an excessive hose run, a bad high loop setup, a blocked air gap, or a restricted disposer inlet.
Drain pumpInspect the pump inlet and impeller for glass, labels, seeds, or food paste, then check that the rotor turns without scraping. On models whose tech sheet calls for 12 VDC at the pump, a steady drain command with proper DC and no water movement points to a weak or jammed pump.
Sump check valve and sump passageRemove the filter stack and inspect the sump throat that feeds the pump. A stuck flap, cracked outlet hose, or debris packed at the pump outlet can let the pump make noise while flow stays weak.
Float switch or water level sensorCheck that the float moves and the switch changes state when operated. A stuck float or switch that doesn’t change can make the control misread the water level and end the drain routine with OE.
Main control boardCommand a drain in service mode or cancel/drain, then check the pump feed at the connector against the model tech sheet. If the sheet calls for DC and the meter shows AC, no stable output, or output that drops out with the pump connected, the tech traces wiring before condemning the board.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset an LG dishwasher OE code?

You can turn power off for a minute, then start a new cycle. If OE returns, treat it as a real drain fault rather than a control glitch.

Is it normal for the drain pump to pulse?

Some LG drain routines pulse the pump before or during draining. Pulsing by itself doesn’t prove the pump is bad, but pulsing with little or no water flow points to a blockage, weak pump, or control output problem.

Do all LG dishwashers have a removable filter?

No. Many have a filter stack in the tub, while some use a self-cleaning filter system that grinds small food bits before draining. Check the owner’s manual if you don’t see the mesh filter under the lower spray arm.

Could the garbage disposal cause OE?

Yes. A blocked disposer inlet, a greasy hose connection, or an inlet plug left in a new disposer can stop the dishwasher from draining.

Is an OE code covered by warranty?

Coverage depends on the appliance age, the plan terms, and the cause. Clogs, installation issues, and disposer plug problems are often treated differently from a failed pump or control board.
