Maytag dishwasher F8 E4 or E4 F8: what it means and how to fix it
Your Maytag dishwasher may beep, flash F8 E4, or show an alternating code that gets read as E4 F8, run the drain pump, then refuse to start a cycle. This page explains what the code means, what you can check from the front of the machine and under the sink, and when a technician needs to test the leak float circuit.

Maytag dishwasher code E4 F8 is the Whirlpool/Maytag F8E4 overfill or leak float fault. The control is seeing the base tray float switch circuit open, often because water or suds have lifted the float, so the dishwasher starts draining and blocks normal use. A common cause is water in the drip tray from oversudsing, often after dish soap, hand soap residue, or too much detergent got into the machine.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Press Cancel twice
Press Cancel once to quiet the alarm, then press Cancel again to clear the display. If the code comes back right away, don't keep trying cycles, because the tray float is still being seen as tripped.
- Check for suds in the tub
Open the door and look for foam, bubbles, or a soap film around the sump. If you see suds, leave the door open so the foam can settle, wipe out what you can reach, and use only automatic dishwasher detergent from here on.
- Look for water in the lower drip tray
The water that trips this code is often under the tub, so the inside of the dishwasher can look dry. If your model has a front drip tray that slides out without removing panels, pull it gently, empty it, and stop if the float switch wire starts to stretch.
- Check a new install for supply leaks
Look under the sink and at the front lower area for drips from the water line. A cross-threaded 90 degree elbow, missing rubber washer, or loose coupling can put water into the base tray during the first fills.
- Check the drain hose under the sink
The drain hose should rise high in the cabinet before it connects to the sink drain or disposal. If a disposal was just installed or replaced, the knockout plug at the dishwasher hose port must be removed, or the dishwasher may not drain and water can back up in the hose.
- Think back to the last load
Regular dish soap, hand soap residue, or homemade soap residue can make enough foam to push water into the base tray. That is the detail owners miss: the tub can be empty while the little flood pan below it is still wet.
Every Maytag dishwasher error code in one table, with what each means and what to check first →
The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
- Some models: on the top edge of the door
Conditions that make this more likely
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Can I reset Maytag dishwasher code E4 F8?
Yes. Press Cancel once to stop the tone, then press Cancel again to clear the code. If the tray is still wet or the float switch circuit is open, the code will return.
Why is there no water inside the dishwasher?
The leak sensor is under the tub, in the base tray. Suds or a small leak can put water there while the wash tub looks dry.
Is E4 F8 the same as F8 E4?
Yes for this fault. The published format is F8E4, shown as F8 then E4 or 8 blinks then 4 blinks, but owners often read the alternating display as E4 F8.
Should I turn the breaker off?
If there's active leaking or you can't shut the water off, don't use the breaker as a reset. Keep the door closed, press Cancel once, and call service. A power reset may clear the display, but it won't dry the tray or fix the float circuit.
Is this common on a new dishwasher?
It can happen after installation if the water supply fitting leaks, the float connector is loose, or the drain hose is set up wrong. If it's newly installed, have the installer or a repair company check those points before parts are replaced.
