Maytag dishwasher not rinsing: what to check when dishes stay dirty
You may see gritty plates, a pod left in the cup, or an upper rack that looks untouched after a full cycle. This guide walks through the checks that are safe at the door, then shows what a technician tests when the dishwasher fills or drains but doesn't wash.

A Maytag dishwasher not rinsing usually means wash water isn't reaching the spray arms with enough force, so detergent and food stay on the dishes. A clogged owner-access filter, blocked spray arm, or debris around the sump screen is a common cause, especially when the upper rack stays dirty while the unit still fills and drains.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Clean the filter area you can reach
Pull out the lower rack and remove the owner-access filter if your model has one. Rinse the screen under warm water, then look for labels, seeds, glass, or food packed around the round sump opening; this is a common Maytag wash complaint, but published repair rates aren't available.
- Make sure the spray arms can turn
With the racks in place, spin the lower and middle arms by hand. Clear plugged jet holes with a toothpick, then check for a split seam or an arm hitting a pan handle.
- Check how the racks are loaded
Bowls should face down toward the spray pattern. Overloaded racks block water, so the soap door may open while the pod sits there mostly intact.
- Use dishwasher detergent and rinse aid
Use automatic dishwasher detergent only; dish soap makes suds that cut wash action and can leak at the door. Add liquid rinse aid if dishes show white film or hard-water spots.
- Confirm water is entering the tub
Start a cycle, wait a few minutes, then crack the door and wait for spraying to stop. There should be water in the bottom of the tub. If it's dry, make sure the under-sink shutoff is fully open, then check that the float dome at the front right of the tub moves up and down.

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
- Some models: on the top edge of the door
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
Hard water makes this more likely
Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Can I reset a Maytag dishwasher that isn't rinsing?
You can turn power off at the breaker for 30 seconds, then run a short cycle. A reset may clear a stuck control, but it won't clear a clogged filter or a failed wash pump.
Why is only the upper rack still dirty?
Upper rack failure usually means low wash volume. The usual checks are a blocked sump screen, a clogged or cracked spray arm, or a poor seal at the rear docking station that feeds the middle spray arm.
Does rinse aid matter for cleaning?
Yes. Rinse aid helps control mineral deposits and improves drying, so it can reduce white film that looks like poor rinsing.
What if there is no water in the tub?
Check that the water shutoff is open and the float dome isn't stuck up. If those are fine, a technician tests the float switch, inlet valve power, and control output.
Is this different on Maytag dishwashers with Dual Power Filtration?
Those models are built to grind and filter food during the wash, but debris can still restrict the sump or pump area. Clean only the owner-access parts your manual allows, then have the wash pump checked if the arms still don't move.
