Maytag dishwasher leaking at bottom of door: what it means and what to check
A leak at the lower edge of a Maytag dishwasher door usually shows up as a puddle in front of the machine during wash or rinse. This page helps you sort out a door-seal leak from suds, bad spray direction, overfill, or a leak that only looks like it’s coming from the door.

A Maytag dishwasher leaking at bottom of door often means water is getting past the door seal area because the gasket is dirty, flattened, torn, or the door isn't closing squarely. A worn or dirty door gasket is a common cause, especially when the puddle starts at the front corners or along the lower edge.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Wipe and inspect the door gasket
Open the door and look at the rubber seal around the tub opening. Clean off food grit, check for cuts or flat spots, and look for small lower-corner baffles if your model uses them.
- Check for suds
If you see foam in the tub, the leak may be detergent related. Dish soap, spilled rinse aid, a loose rinse aid cap, or too much dishwasher detergent can push suds out through the lower door area.
- Spin the lower spray arm
Pull the lower rack out and turn the spray arm by hand. It should spin smoothly, sit level, and avoid hitting dishes or the rack, since a warped or blocked arm can aim water at the lower door lip.
- Look at loading near the door
Move pans, cutting boards, and long utensils away from the front. Anything that deflects spray toward the door can make a good gasket look bad.
- Check level and door fit
A dishwasher that tilts forward or sits twisted in the cabinet can leak at the door. If the door rubs, pops open slightly, or the gaps look uneven, leveling may be part of the repair.
- Clean the filter and check the drain path
Remove and rinse the filter if your use guide shows it as owner-serviceable. More than a small amount of water left in the sump area can point to a drain restriction, blocked air gap, or a drain hose issue.

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
- Some models: on the top edge of the door
Conditions that make this more likely
The house drain can be the real problem
Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.
Inlet screens clog quietly
The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Can I keep running a Maytag dishwasher that leaks from the door?
No. Shut it off, dry the floor, and use the breaker if water is near wiring or the machine keeps leaking. Repeated leaks can damage flooring and cabinets.
Will a reset fix a Maytag dishwasher leak?
A reset can clear a control glitch, yet it won't fix a torn gasket, warped spray arm, suds problem, overfill, or pump seal leak. If water comes out again on the next cycle, treat it as a leak fault.
Why does it leak only at the beginning of the wash?
That often points to spray direction, suds, or overfill. The lower spray arm starts throwing water as soon as the wash motor runs, and a split arm can aim water right at the lower door opening.
Where is the Maytag dishwasher model number?
Open the door and look along the tub frame, often on the left side or near the inner door opening. The label may sit close to the black rubber seal.
Is replacing the door gasket enough?
Often, yes, if the gasket is cracked, flattened, or loose in the channel. If the new gasket still leaks, the technician should check the lower spray arm, leveling, dispenser seal, and fill level before changing more parts.
