Maytag washer leaking from bottom: what it means and what to check

A Maytag washer leaking from the bottom can leave a puddle under the center, front-left corner, or rear of the machine. The timing matters. This guide shows what you can check safely, then what a technician tests when the leak is inside the cabinet.

Straight answer

A Maytag washer leaking from the bottom means water is escaping from a fill hose, drain hose, drain pump, tub seal, dispenser path, or another hose inside the cabinet. A common bottom leak source is the drain path: a loose clamp, cracked hose, or leaking drain pump.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Stop the cycle and shut off the water

If water is near the cord, outlet, or your feet, don’t touch the plug. Turn the washer off at the breaker if you can do it safely, then turn both supply valves clockwise. Mop up the floor so you can see where new water appears.

  2. Run a short, watched test only if the area is dry

If it’s safe to do so, run a small load and watch when the leak starts. Fill-time leaks point toward inlet hoses, dispenser flow, or overfill. Drain and spin leaks point more toward the drain hose, pump, or tub-to-pump hose.

  3. Check the fill hoses behind the washer

Look for water at the hose ends, cracked rubber, bulges, or missing flat washers inside the hose fittings. Tighten by hand first, then snug lightly if needed. Replace any hose that is cracked or seeping.

  4. Check the drain hose and standpipe

Make sure the drain hose is seated in the standpipe, not pushed too far down, kinked, or split. A blocked standpipe can make water back up and look like the washer is leaking from below.

  5. Reduce detergent and load size

Too much detergent or a packed load can splash or overflow, especially on a top-load washer. Use HE detergent only. If the leak happens with bulky items, run a smaller test load.

  6. Level the washer

A washer that rocks in spin can splash water off the basket, load, or tub cover area. Press down on opposite corners. If it rocks, adjust the feet until it sits solidly.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Front-load: on the door frame or inside the door rim
  2. Top-load: under the lid at the back, or on the back panel

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Inlet screens clog quietly

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drain pumpThe technician checks the pump body, inlet, outlet, and motor-side seam for water trails or active dripping during drain. A cracked pump housing, seepage around the shaft area, or water thrown from the pump during spin means the pump is replaced.
Tub-to-pump hose and drain hose clampsThe large rubber hose from the tub to the pump is checked for splits at the clamp marks, rub holes, and debris caught in the hose. A loose spring clamp or a hose that weeps only when the tub is full can mimic a bad pump.
Center tub sealThe tech looks under the tub for water running down the center, often with rust-colored or white mineral tracks near the drive area. On Whirlpool-built Maytag top-load designs, this leak can leave marks around the gearcase or splutch area and may show more during fill or agitation.
Water inlet valve assemblyIf the washer drips while powered off, the valve is suspected. The tech checks whether shutting the wall valves stops the drip, then inspects the plastic valve body where the hot and cold hoses connect and watches the dispenser flow during fill.
Front-load dispenser and door bootFor a front-left bottom puddle on a front-load washer, the dispenser drawer, dispenser outlet hose, and door boot are checked for overflow paths, cracks, soap buildup, or a loose connection. Clean water around the dispenser area can point to a clogged or partly open dispenser, while water at the door lip points to the boot.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset stop a Maytag washer leak?

No. A reset may clear a control fault, but it won’t seal a pump, hose, valve, or tub seal. Stop using the washer until the leak source is found.

Is it safe to keep using the washer if the leak is small?

It’s risky. Water can reach electrical parts, flooring, or the wall behind the washer. Shut off the water if the leak continues while the washer is off.

Why does it leak only during spin?

Spin leaks often come from the drain hose, pump, pump hose, tub cover gasket on some top-load models, or an off-balance load. Start with leveling, load size, and the outside drain hose before assuming an internal part failed.

Why is my Maytag washer leaking when it is off?

A steady drip into the tub or dispenser while the washer is off usually points to a water inlet valve that isn’t closing. Cleaning the dispenser may help flow problems, but it won’t fix a valve that is seeping.

What if my Maytag washer is still under warranty?

If the washer is new enough to still be covered, avoid opening panels or replacing parts yourself. Contact the manufacturer or the seller’s service channel first so the repair record stays clean.
