Samsung dishwasher not washing: what to check and what it means

A Samsung dishwasher can run a full cycle and still leave grit, food, or a film on the dishes. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when the wash spray is weak or uneven.

Straight answer

A Samsung dishwasher not washing usually means wash water isn't reaching the dishes with enough force, or the detergent isn't being released at the right time. The most common cause is use or cleaning related: clogged filters, blocked spray arm jets, or dishes loaded so the arm can't turn.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the loading and spray arm clearance

Pull the racks out and look for a pan handle, cutting board, or tall plate blocking a spray arm. Large items should sit around the outside of the rack, with dirty faces aimed toward the center spray.

  2. Clean the spray arm jets

Food grit in the small end holes can stop the arm from spinning because those holes help drive the arm. On many Samsung units the lower arm pulls straight up, while the middle arm comes off by holding the nut and turning the arm clockwise, then the jets can be washed with warm soapy water and a soft brush.

  3. Clean the filter area

Remove the lower rack and clean the removable filter parts your manual shows. Samsung notes that cleaning the dishwasher often restores much of its wash performance, and a loaded filter can throw food soil back onto dishes.

  4. Use hotter water and the right cycle

Run the nearby sink until the water is hot before starting a load. Detergent packs may leave residue if water is too cool, and heavy soil needs a stronger cycle than a light or quick wash.

  5. Check the dispenser and rinse aid

Look for detergent packed around the soap cup spring or door. Clean the cup with a small brush, use the amount listed on the detergent label, and refill rinse aid if the machine has been leaving film or drying poorly.

  6. Look under the sink at the drain hose loop

The drain hose should use a high loop or an air gap before it connects to the sink drain or disposer. If dirty drain water can run back into the tub, dishes may come out gritty even though the dishwasher ran.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a dishwasher12
  1. Open the door: on the left or right edge of the tub or door
  2. Some models: on the top edge of the door

Conditions that make this more likely

The house drain can be the real problem

Older homes often have narrow or partly blocked standpipes and drain lines. If the machine's own filter and hose are clear, the house drain is the next suspect, and that's a plumbing call rather than an appliance call.

Inlet screens clog quietly

The small mesh screens where the hoses meet the machine catch sediment and scale. On hard water or an older supply line, a screen can block enough within a few years to trigger a fill error. Cleaning them is a common fix.

Hard water makes this more likely

Water above about 7 grains per gallon counts as hard, and USGS maps put much of the Southwest, Texas, the Great Plains and the Midwest above that. Scale builds up on inlet screens, valves, heating elements and spray arms years sooner than the manuals assume. If you're on hard water and this fault points to a fill or heating part, mineral buildup is the first thing a technician will look for.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Spray arms, filters, and wash delivery tubeThe technician checks for plugged arm holes, cracked seams, loose mounting, a worn bearing surface, or an arm that rubs the rack. On upper rack complaints, the docking station flappers and rear water tube are checked for cracks, a loose fit, or a blocked internal screen if that model uses one.
Water inlet valveDuring a fill, the valve is tested for 120 Vac at the valve connector. If 120 Vac is present, the supply valve is open, the line is not kinked or restricted, and water still doesn't enter or the level stays low, the valve is bad; if voltage is missing, the float switch, wiring, and control output are checked next.
Circulation pump, impeller, and sump areaAfter fill, the wash motor should move water hard enough to spin the arms. A technician inspects the pump inlet, ducts under the filter screen, impeller, and any chopper or grinder parts that model uses for food debris, broken plastic, wear, discoloration, or a jam that cuts wash pressure.
Detergent dispenserThe cup is checked for a door that sticks, a blocked spring, or leftover detergent packed in the latch area. If it doesn't open during a test cycle, the technician checks the door wiring and dispenser feed before replacing the dispenser.
Distributor motor or Waterwall vane motorIf one rack or one zone stays dirty while the rest of the load looks clean, the spray arms are cleared first, then the water distributor is checked for position changes. On Waterwall models, the lower vane should travel from front to rear; a stalled vane points to the vane motor or its drive parts.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will a reset fix a Samsung dishwasher not washing?

A reset can clear a control glitch, so it's fine to turn power off at the breaker for one minute and restart. If the filter is packed, the spray arms are blocked, or the pump is weak, the symptom will come right back.

Why is only one rack getting clean?

That points to a water delivery problem in one wash zone. Common causes are a blocked spray arm, a bad upper rack docking station, a cracked delivery tube, or a distributor issue.

Should I pre-rinse dishes before loading?

Scrape off large food pieces, then load the dishes dirty. Many dishwashers use soil sensing, and detergent is made to work with food soil during the cycle.

Can hard water make a Samsung dishwasher stop cleaning well?

Yes. Hard water can leave film, clog small spray holes, and build scale in the dispenser area; models with a softener reservoir also need the correct salt and regeneration setting from the manual.

How can I tell if the water inlet valve is the issue?

Signs include weak spray, detergent that doesn't dissolve well, or a tub that sounds too quiet after the fill part of the cycle. A technician confirms it by checking the fill voltage, the home's water supply, and the fill line before calling the valve bad.
