F1 code on a Frigidaire oven: what it means and what to check

Your Frigidaire oven or range is beeping, showing F1, or refusing normal button presses. This page explains what that code means, what you can safely try at the console, and what a technician tests when the code comes back.

What the display shows
Straight answer

On many Frigidaire electric ranges, F1 means the control has detected a shorted keypad. On some older Frigidaire controls, F1 is a broader control-failure code that can include a stuck keypad, a corrupted control, a stuck relay, or a sensor-related runaway heat fault.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset power to the range

Shut power off at the breaker or unplug the range if the plug is easy to reach. Leave it off for at least 30 seconds, then restore power and watch whether F1 returns right away.

  2. Dry and clean the console

Wipe the control area with a dry microfiber cloth. If cleaner or steam got on the panel, let the console dry with power off before trying the oven again. Don't spray cleaner straight onto the touch panel.

  3. Feel for a stuck key

Press each button gently and let it come back. A key that feels cocked, gummy, or slow can make the control think it’s being held down.

  4. Notice when F1 appears

A code that appears right at power-up points more toward the keypad, ribbon connection, or control board. A code that shows after pressing one key can point toward that key or the console membrane.

  5. Stop using it if heat acts wrong

If the oven heats when it shouldn't, runs too hot, or the display changes settings on its own, shut off power at the breaker. That moves this from a nuisance beep to a control safety issue.

  6. Don't force a locked door

If F1 is paired with a locked door, let the oven cool and cycle power once. If it stays locked, a technician may need to open the unit and check the latch switch after the control fault is handled.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Keypad or touch-panel consoleWith power removed, the tech checks for stuck keys, moisture tracks, cleaner residue, or a membrane that responds without being touched. On many designs the keypad ribbon can be isolated from the control; if F1 stops with the keypad out of the circuit, the console is the suspect.
Ribbon cable and keypad connectorThe ribbon is checked for cracked traces, corrosion, loose seating, or a crease where it folds into the electronic oven control. A common tell is an F1 that changes when the console is moved or after the connector is reseated.
Electronic oven control, ERC, or display relay boardIf the keypad is isolated and F1 still comes back, the board's key-scan or low-voltage input circuit is suspect. Some Frigidaire controls log F1 for internal checksum, relay, or runaway-heat faults, so the board may be replaced or rebuilt as a complete control after the sensor and keypad checks pass.
Oven temperature sensor probeThis test matters when F1 appears with overheating or poor temperature control. The sensor should read about 1080 ohms at room temperature; a reading far off, open, or shorted points to the sensor or its wiring rather than only the console.
Door latch and lock switchIf the door stays locked after an F1 event, the tech checks that the latch motor or switch changes state as the latch moves. If the control board is still locked in a fault state, the latch reset may not work until the board or console fault is corrected.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will resetting the breaker clear the F1 code on a Frigidaire oven?

It can clear a one-time control glitch. If F1 returns right away or after you use the keypad, the console or electronic control needs testing.

Is F1 usually the keypad or the control board?

Frigidaire's owner support lists F1 on electric ranges as a shorted keypad fault. Some tech sheets use F1 more broadly, so a technician checks the keypad or touch panel, ribbon connection, sensor circuit if overheating is present, and electronic control by model.

Can moisture cause the F1 code on a Frigidaire range?

Yes. Steam, cleaner, or water on the console can make the touch panel send a false key signal, so drying the panel with power off is worth trying.

What if the oven seems too hot when F1 appears?

Shut off power and don't keep cooking with it. A technician should check the temperature sensor, which should read about 1080 ohms at room temperature, and then test the control board.

Does this apply to gas Frigidaire ranges too?

The maker's F1 note is for electric ranges. Many gas models use similar electronic controls, but the exact meaning can vary by model, so the model number matters.
