Frigidaire oven not heating: what it means and what to check

Your Frigidaire oven may stay cold, warm only a little, or take a long time to preheat. This guide shows the safe checks to make first, then what a technician tests on gas and electric models.

Straight answer

A Frigidaire oven not heating means the bake system is not getting usable heat from the element, igniter, power supply, sensor, or control. The single most common cause depends on fuel type: a weak igniter on gas models, or a burned bake element on electric models.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset the range breaker fully

On electric ranges, a lost leg of the range circuit can leave the clock, light, or controls working while the oven doesn't get full heating voltage. Turn the range breaker fully off, then back on. If it trips again, stop there.

  2. Compare Bake and Broil

Set Broil for a short test after the oven is cool, then cancel it. If Broil heats but Bake stays cold, the bake element, bake relay, or gas bake ignition parts move to the front of the list.

  3. Look at the electric bake element

On electric Frigidaire ovens, check the lower element for a split, blister, hole, burnt spot, or one area that stays dark while the rest glows. A visibly damaged element is a failed element.

  4. Watch the gas oven igniter

On gas models, set Bake and look for a bright orange igniter near the oven burner without removing panels. The burner should light within roughly 60 to 90 seconds. If the igniter glows and the burner doesn't light, cancel Bake. That often means a weak igniter.

  5. Check the door gasket if it heats slowly

If the oven heats but won’t reach temperature, look at the woven gasket around the door. A torn, loose, or missing gasket lets heat escape, which can make preheat slow or cooking uneven.

  6. Stop if you smell gas

If you smell gas, don't try another Bake test or light anything. Leave the area, avoid electrical switches and phones inside, and call the gas supplier from outside or a neighbor's phone. If you can't reach the gas supplier, call the fire department.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a oven12
  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Gas oven igniterSet the oven to Bake and watch the igniter. It should glow bright orange and the burner should light within the model's normal ignition window. A glowing igniter with no burner flame points to checking igniter amp draw before condemning the safety valve.
Bake elementWith power disconnected, isolate one element lead and test the element for continuity. An open circuit, blister, hole, split, or burnt spot means the element has failed.
Incoming 240V supply and terminal blockAt the terminal block, check L1 to neutral and L2 to neutral for about 120V each, then L1 to L2 for the rated supply, usually about 208V to 240V. Burnt lugs, a melted block, or wrong voltage sends the diagnosis to the cord, block, breaker, or house wiring.
Oven temperature sensor, RTD probeUnplug the sensor and read resistance at room temperature. It should be about 1,080 ohms; an open reading or a value far from that points to the sensor or its wiring connection.
Electronic oven control, bake relayAfter the element and supply voltage test good, check whether the control sends voltage to the bake output during a Bake call. No bake output, odd error codes, random cycling, or several dead oven functions points to the clock/control board.

Don't see your symptom?

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Common questions about appliance repair

Will resetting the breaker fix a Frigidaire oven that won’t heat?

Sometimes. If one leg of a 240V circuit dropped out, a full breaker reset can restore heat; if the oven stays cold, a part or power connection needs testing.

Why does the cooktop work but the oven won’t heat?

The cooktop working does not prove the oven circuit is healthy. On electric ranges, the oven may still have a bad bake element, failed bake relay, or lost leg in the bake circuit; on gas ranges, surface burners can work while the oven igniter is too weak.

Why does my gas Frigidaire oven igniter glow but no flame starts?

A gas oven igniter can glow while still being too weak to open the safety valve. If it glows and the burner never lights, the igniter is the first part a technician checks, usually by amp draw.

Is a Frigidaire oven worth fixing when it won’t heat?

Usually, yes, when the fault is one igniter, bake element, sensor, or gasket. If an older basic range needs a control board plus burnt wiring, replacement starts to make more sense.

Could installation or warranty affect this repair?

Yes. If the oven was installed within the past 30 days, have the installer check the power setup because poor preheat can come from improper supply voltage.
