Frigidaire oven code F31: what it means and what to check

Your Frigidaire range is beeping, stops baking, or shows F31 as soon as you start the oven. This page explains what F31 points to, what you can safely try, and how a technician proves whether it’s the sensor, wiring, or control board.

What the display shows
Straight answer

Frigidaire oven code F31 means the control sees a shorted oven temperature probe circuit. Common causes are a shorted oven temperature sensor probe, pinched or shorted sensor wiring, a loose connector, or a control board that is misreading the sensor circuit.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Reset power for 30 seconds

Turn the range off at the breaker or unplug it if the plug is easy to reach, then restore power after 30 seconds. If F31 clears and stays away, it may have been a stored fault; if it returns, the sensor circuit needs testing.

  2. Let the oven cool

F31 is tied to the oven temperature sensor, so let the oven cool before you look inside the cavity. Don’t keep starting Bake if the code comes right back.

  3. Look at the sensor from inside the oven

The oven temperature sensor is the thin metal probe that sticks through the rear oven wall on many Frigidaire ranges. Check for a bent probe, a loose mounting screw, or visible damage, but don’t pull it out or remove panels.

  4. Note when F31 appears

Write down whether the code appears right after power is restored, when Bake starts, or after the oven has been heating for a few minutes. That timing helps separate a hard short from a loose connection.

  5. For a recent install, call the installer

If the range was installed within the last 30 days, start with the installer. A pinched sensor lead or loose plug behind the range can cause the same F31 fault.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Oven temperature sensor probeWith the oven at room temperature and power off, a technician unplugs the sensor and checks resistance at the probe leads. A normal Frigidaire-style RTD sensor is near 1,080 ohms at room temperature; a reading far from that points to a bad probe.
Sensor circuit at the electronic oven controlAt the control board, the technician unplugs the sensor harness connector and measures across the two sensor-circuit wires shown on the tech sheet. Near 1,080 ohms means the probe and sensor wiring are likely being seen by the board; a bad reading means the fault is in the probe or wiring path.
Sensor wiring to cabinet groundThe technician checks each sensor-circuit wire to the metal range cabinet. OL is the normal reading; 0 ohms means a bare or pinched wire is shorted to the cabinet.
Sensor connector and terminalsThe sensor plug should be fully seated, clean, and tight. Moisture, corrosion, a spread terminal, or a connector that wiggles loose can make the control read the sensor circuit wrong.
Electronic oven control boardIf the sensor reads near 1,080 ohms through the board connector and each sensor wire reads OL to the cabinet, the control is likely misreading a good circuit. In that case a technician replaces the electronic oven control.

Common questions about appliance repair

What does F31 mean on a Frigidaire oven?

F31 means the oven control is reading the temperature probe circuit as shorted. The fault can be the probe itself, its wiring, a connector, or the electronic oven control.

Will resetting the breaker fix an F31 code?

A reset can clear a temporary stored fault. If F31 comes back after the 30-second power reset, the range needs sensor-circuit testing.

Can I keep using the stovetop if the oven shows F31?

If the surface burners or elements act normal and there is no gas smell, the cooktop may still operate because F31 is usually an oven sensor fault. Don’t keep using the oven while it is beeping or stopping with the code.

Is F31 the same on gas and electric Frigidaire ranges?

On Frigidaire ranges, F31 points to the oven temperature sensor circuit. On a gas oven with slow heat or delayed ignition, a technician may also check the igniter after the sensor circuit passes its tests.

Can I replace the oven sensor without testing it?

Replacing it without testing is a guess. A pinched wire or a control board that misreads the sensor can cause the same F31 code, so testing avoids changing the wrong part.
