Frigidaire oven gas not working: what to check first

Your Frigidaire gas range may click, glow, or act normal at the display while the oven stays cold. This page explains what that usually means, what you can check safely, and when the fault moves into gas or electrical testing.

Straight answer

A Frigidaire oven gas not working usually means the bake burner is not lighting or the control is not sending the right heat command. The single most common cause is a weak bake igniter that glows but can’t pull enough current to open the oven safety valve.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Stop if you smell gas

If you smell gas, don't try to light anything, press controls, or touch switches. Leave the area and call your gas supplier or emergency services from outside. Don't keep starting Bake to see if it catches.

  2. Check the surface burners

Light a surface burner. If the burners don’t light either, the range may have a gas supply issue rather than an oven part failure.

  3. Reset power to the range

Unplug the range or turn the breaker off for a short time, then restore power and set the clock. This clears some control lock, clock, or failed start states, but it won’t fix a weak igniter.

  4. Start Bake and watch the igniter

Before this test, check whether your model and serial are in the current gas oven burner recall; if they are, don't use the oven. If not, look through the oven floor slots or lower vent without removing panels. The burner should light within about 1 to 2 minutes. If the igniter glows dim orange and no flame appears, cancel Bake and suspect a weak bake igniter.

  5. Compare Bake and Broil

If your model has a gas broiler, try Broil after the oven has cooled. Broil working while Bake does nothing helps narrow the problem to the bake igniter, bake burner circuit, or the board output for Bake.

Electric ovens bake with an element on the floor, hidden under a floor panel on many newer models, and broil with one at the top. The temperature sensor is the thin probe on the upper back wall. Gas ovens light a burner under the floor panel with a glowing igniter.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

  1. Behind the storage drawer, on the frame
  2. Or on the oven frame, visible with the door open

Conditions that make this more likely

Boards fail earlier in hot rooms

Electronics are rated for room temperature. In a garage or an unconditioned laundry room in summer, a control board can sit well above that for hours a day. Before replacing a board, a good technician confirms the parts it controls test good, since a shorted pump or valve can take out a new board too.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Bake igniterA technician starts Bake and watches the igniter at the burner. A healthy one gets bright orange and lights the burner in about 60 seconds; one that stays dim orange for minutes with no burner flame is treated as weak even though it glows.
Oven temperature sensor, RTD probeThe sensor is unplugged and checked for resistance at room temperature. It should read about 1,080 ohms; an open reading or a reading far from that points to a bad sensor or damaged sensor wiring.
Oven safety valveThe valve is checked after the igniter has been proven able to heat and draw properly. If the igniter is doing its job and the valve still does not pass gas to the bake burner, the valve is the suspect; replacing it before testing the igniter is a common wrong turn.
Electronic oven control boardThe technician checks whether the board sends power to the bake circuit when Bake is selected. No bake output with a good sensor, intact wiring, and a good igniter points to a failed relay or board; scorch marks or erratic display behavior add weight.
Thermal fuse or limit deviceThe fuse or limit device is checked for continuity with power off. If a non-resettable thermal fuse is open, it stops heat until replaced, so the technician also looks for the overheat cause, often after a self-clean cycle.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Frigidaire gas oven that won’t work?

You can reset power by unplugging the range or cycling the breaker, then setting the clock. If the igniter is weak or the safety valve has failed, the problem will come right back.

Why do the stove burners work but the oven doesn’t?

The surface burners and oven burner use different ignition parts. Working surface burners tell you gas is reaching the range, while the oven still may have a weak bake igniter or a failed bake circuit.

If the oven igniter glows, can it still be bad?

Yes. This is the classic Frigidaire gas oven miss. The igniter can glow orange and still be too weak to open the safety valve, so the burner never lights.

Is a weak igniter worth fixing?

On a clean range that otherwise works, yes, this one is usually worth fixing. If the unit is very old or has a failed board plus gas valve trouble, a technician may tell you replacement is the smarter path.

Can self-clean cause a gas oven to stop heating?

Yes. The heat from self-clean can stress the igniter, sensor, thermal fuse, latch, or board. If the failure started right after self-clean, tell the repair company before the visit.
