Maytag dryer error codes: what each one means

This table covers confirmed Maytag dryer display codes from owner help pages, service manuals, and tech sheets. Start with the safe homeowner check listed for the code you see, and stop if the row says a technician is needed.

Reading the code

Electronic Maytag dryers show codes on the time display, often alternating the F number and E number; older models may show F:##, F-##, PF, AF, or L2. To clear a code, unplug the dryer or turn off its dryer breaker, then restore power; PF can usually be cleared with POWER, while AF, Check Vent, and L2 are alerts tied to airflow or supply power rather than a failed dryer part by themselves.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a dryer12
  1. Inside the door opening, on the frame
  2. Some models: on the back panel

Maytag dryer error codes

Covers electronic residential and commercial grade residential dryers, including newer F# E# formats and older F:## or F-## formats documented in service sheets.

17 codes

CodeWhat it meansCheck firstUsually
AF / F4 E3 / F30The control detected restricted airflow; some displays show Check Vent for the same condition. Full guide →Unplug the dryer, clean the lint screen, check the visible vent path for crushing or blockage, then try a heated Timed Dry cycle.Often a home check
L2 / F4 E4 / F31The dryer detected low or missing line voltage, so an electric dryer may tumble without heat.Check that both dryer breakers are fully on and that the power cord is firmly plugged in, then try one heated Timed Dry cycle. If the code returns, have the power supply or dryer checked.Often a home check
PFPower was interrupted while a drying cycle was running. Full guide →Press POWER to clear the display, or press and hold START to continue the interrupted cycle if the dryer otherwise works normally.Often a home check
F1 E1 / F01The main control detected a stuck motor relay, primary control failure, or dryer motor control circuit fault, depending on model family.Needs a technician because the diagnosis involves the main control, motor relay circuit, or internal dryer wiring.Usually a technician
F2 E1 / F02The user interface detected a stuck button, keypad fault, or interface mismatch on some older models.Unplug the dryer for 60 seconds, then make sure no console button is stuck or being held down before restarting.Often a home check
F3 E1 / F22 / F23The exhaust or outlet thermistor circuit is open or shorted; older F22 means open and F23 means shorted.Needs a technician because the exhaust temperature sensor circuit and its wiring must be tested with the dryer unplugged.Usually a technician
F3 E2 / F28 / F29The moisture sensor did not report expected data, or the sensor strip circuit is open or shorted on models that store service codes.Unplug the dryer, wipe the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with a damp cloth, level the dryer, and try a normal automatic cycle with a medium load.Often a home check
F6 E1 / F6 E2 / F6 E3The main control and user interface lost communication or one board cannot hear the other.Turn power off to the dryer, wait, restart it, and if the code returns have a technician check the control, user interface, and harness.Usually a technician
F4 E1 / F4 E2 / F20The control did not detect expected voltage at the heater relay or detected a heater connector problem.Needs a technician because heater relay, heater circuit, and wiring checks require internal access.Usually a technician
F3 E3 / F24 / F25The inlet thermistor circuit is open or shorted; older F24 means open and F25 means shorted.Needs a technician because the inlet temperature sensor circuit is inside the dryer and must be tested with the dryer unplugged.Usually a technician
F4 E5The dryer exceeded its high temperature limit, usually from poor airflow or an airflow related component problem.Stop the cycle, clean the lint screen, check the visible vent path, and let the dryer cool before any restart attempt.Often a home check
F7 E1 / F26The control detected a motor, motor drive, control, or related wiring fault.Needs a technician because the motor, control, belt switch, and internal wiring may need testing.Usually a technician
F70 / F71Older or commercial grade displays use these codes when the machine control and console or user interface are not communicating.Needs a technician because the display control and main control communication wiring are inside the machine.Usually a technician
F2 E3 / F2 E4 / F2 E5The user interface or control has a model mismatch, incompatible settings file, or invalid settings memory.Needs a technician because the user interface software, model ID, or replacement part match must be verified.Usually a technician
F1 E3 / F1 E5The dryer detected an incorrect controller on some electric models or missing control settings data.Needs a technician because the main control settings file or model configuration must be verified.Usually a technician
F3 E7The rear moisture sensor strip circuit is open or shorted on models equipped with that rear sensor.Unplug the dryer and wipe any moisture sensor bars you can reach from inside the drum; if the code returns, a technician is needed.Usually a technician
F72 to F78 / F73 / F74The console electronics failed or the user interface memory could not be read correctly.Needs a technician because the console electronics or interface memory must be diagnosed and replaced if faulty.Usually a technician

Common questions about appliance repair

How do I reset a Maytag dryer code?

Unplug the dryer or turn off its dryer breaker, wait, then restore power and run a Timed Dry cycle. If the same code returns, use the safe check in the table and contact a repair company when the table says a technician is needed.

Why does the same Maytag dryer code keep coming back?

A returning code means the control is still seeing the same airflow, power supply, sensor, heater, motor, or communication problem. Do not keep restarting a dryer that shows heat, voltage, control, or motor codes.

Are older F codes the same as newer F E codes?

Often, but not always. Many older dryers use F:## or F-## codes, while newer electronic models use F# E# codes, so match the exact code and model family when possible.

Is Check Vent a fault code?

Check Vent, AF, and F4 E3 are airflow alerts, and the dryer may keep running while showing them. They still need attention because blocked airflow can cause long dry times and overheating.

Still showing the problem after the checks?

Call and describe what you tried. You'll be connected with an independent repair company near you.
