Maytag dryer not spinning: what it means and what to check

You press Start and the dryer lights up, clicks, hums, or heats, but the drum doesn't turn. This page walks through the safe checks first, then the parts a technician tests when a Maytag dryer stops tumbling.

Straight answer

A Maytag dryer not spinning means the motor isn't able to turn the drum, or the dryer is being stopped by a safety switch before the motor can run. The single most common cause is a broken or slipped drive belt, especially if the motor runs but the drum stays still.

Check these first

Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.

  1. Check the plug and breaker

Make sure the dryer plug is fully seated. For an electric Maytag dryer, reset the paired breaker fully off, then back on, since it needs a 240-volt supply to run properly.

  2. Turn off Control Lock

If the panel lights respond but Start won't begin a cycle, look for Control Lock on the console or in the manual. Some Maytag models won't start until that setting is turned off.

  3. Push the door closed at the latch

Press the door firmly where the latch meets the cabinet. If the door switch doesn't click, or the drum light stays on with the door closed, the dryer may think the door is open.

  4. Turn the empty drum by hand

Open the door and rotate the drum. If it turns with almost no resistance, the belt is likely broken or off the idler pulley; if it's very hard to turn, suspect seized rollers, a rear drum bearing, or a jammed blower wheel.

  5. Listen during Start

A motor sound with no drum movement points toward the belt system. A hum followed by no movement can mean the drum is locked up by rollers, the blower wheel is jammed, or the motor is failing.

Have the model number ready

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:

Where the model tag usually is on a dryer12
  1. Inside the door opening, on the frame
  2. Some models: on the back panel
Worth knowing

Conditions that make this more likely

Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think

Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.

Check both breakers

Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.

What a technician tests

Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

PartHow it's tested
Drive belt and idler pulleyRemove power, open the cabinet, and inspect the belt path around the drum, motor pulley, and idler pulley. A failed setup has a broken belt, a belt off the pulley, weak idler spring tension, or a twisted belt. Check the model's belt diagram for orientation, because some Maytag belts run with ribs toward the drum and some run with the flat side against it.
Drum rollers, roller axles, and rear bearingWith the belt removed, spin the drum by hand and feel for drag. Bad rollers often rumble, bind, wobble, or show worn flats; a failed rear bearing makes the drum hard to move from the back support point.
Blower wheel and housingCheck the blower wheel for lint buildup, a small sock, or debris caught in the vanes. A jammed blower can make the motor hum because the same motor drives the blower and the drum belt.
Door switch and start switchOn models with a drum light, the light should go out when the door switch is pressed. A technician confirms the switch with a meter: the door switch should show continuity when pressed, and a mechanical start switch should show continuity only while the button is held.
Thermal fuse, drive motor, and control boardThe thermal fuse near the blower is checked for continuity after at least one wire is removed; an open fuse is bad and the vent path must be checked. If the belt path and drum supports are clear, the technician checks for voltage reaching the motor from the control circuit and looks for a motor that only hums, clicks, or fails to start under load.

Common questions about appliance repair

Can I reset a Maytag dryer that doesn't spin?

You can unplug it for a few minutes, then plug it back in and try a brief Air Only or empty timed cycle. Stop it right away if the drum still doesn't turn. A reset may clear a control glitch, but it won't fix a broken belt, stuck roller, failed switch, or blown thermal fuse.

Why does my Maytag dryer heat but not spin?

Heat with no tumble is a classic belt clue. The heating system may still work while the drum can't move because the belt has snapped or slipped off the idler pulley.

Is it safe to keep running the dryer if the drum won't turn?

No. Stop using it until the cause is found because heat without tumbling can overheat clothes and stress the motor.

What if the drum spins easily by hand?

That usually points to a broken belt. On some newer dryers, a belt switch may keep the dryer from running at all when the belt breaks.

What if the drum is hard to turn?

That points away from a simple broken belt. A technician will check rollers, the rear bearing, and the blower wheel for binding before condemning the motor.
