Maytag dryer squeaking noise: what it means and what to check
A Maytag dryer squeaking noise can sound like a chirp, squeal, or sharp screech each time the drum turns. This guide helps you rule out loose items, leveling issues, and lint-chute problems before a repair company tests the drum support parts.

A Maytag dryer squeaking noise usually means a rotating drum support or belt-drive part is worn, dry, rubbing, or starting to seize. A common culprit is the idler pulley, especially when the sound is a sharp squeal from the front or front-right area.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Empty the drum and check loose items
Coins, buckles, zipper pulls, buttons, pens, and clips can make a scrape, rattle, or squeak that sounds like a bad part. Look inside the drum, along the front and rear drum edges, and listen at each baffle for pocket change trapped inside.
- Clean the lint screen and visible chute
Pull the lint screen and use a flashlight to look down the lint opening. If lint clumps or a small item are visible at the opening, use a dryer lint brush to remove them, since objects can drop toward the blower and make a rubbing or rattling sound.
- Level the dryer
A dryer that rocks can squeak at the cabinet, legs, or floor instead of inside the drum. Set a level on the top, check front-to-back and side-to-side, then adjust the legs until all four feet sit steady.
- Listen to where the sound starts
A front or front-right squeal points toward the idler pulley. A rear squeak or rumble points more toward drum rollers, roller shafts, the belt, drum bearings, or drum glides.
- Turn the drum by hand with the dryer off
Open the door and turn the drum using a baffle, not the holes in the drum face. A rough spot, scrape, or hard-to-turn drum means a technician should inspect the rollers, belt path, glides, and blower.

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Inside the door opening, on the frame
- Some models: on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think
Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.
Don't see your symptom?
Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Will resetting a Maytag dryer stop a squeaking noise?
A reset can clear some control issues, but it won’t fix a dry pulley, worn roller, bad belt, or rubbing blower wheel. If the squeak happens while the drum turns, treat it as a moving-part problem.
Can I keep using the dryer if it squeaks?
A light, brief chirp may run for a while, but a loud squeal or screech should be checked soon. A seized pulley or roller can damage the belt and may stop the drum.
Is a Maytag dryer squealing noise usually the belt?
Sometimes. The belt should be checked for cracks, fraying, glazing, or damage, though the pulley and drum rollers often make the sharper squeal people blame on the belt.
Why does the squeak fade after the dryer warms up?
A squeak that fades as the dryer warms can come from a bad idler pulley bearing. Rollers, shafts, and felt seals can also change sound as parts heat and shift. The noise coming and going doesn’t clear the fault.
Are gas and electric Maytag dryers checked the same way for squeaks?
The drum rollers, belt, idler pulley, glides, and blower checks are similar. Gas dryers add gas shutoff steps before service, so a technician should handle any internal repair.
