Maytag dryer not drying: what to check first
Your Maytag dryer may run and sound normal, yet clothes come out damp after a full cycle. This page starts with the checks that usually matter most, then shows when the problem moves into parts testing.

A Maytag dryer not drying usually means the dryer is running, but heat or airflow isn't doing enough work, so clothes stay damp or cycles run long. A common cause is restricted airflow from lint in the filter, a crushed vent hose, or a plugged house vent.
Check these first
Safe to do yourself. Unplug the appliance before you start.
- Clean the lint screen, then wash it
Pull the lint screen and remove lint before every load. If you use dryer sheets, wash the screen with hot water, liquid detergent, and a soft brush, then dry it fully. Owners often miss the clear dryer sheet film that can block airflow even when the screen looks clean.
- Look behind the dryer at the vent hose
Unplug the dryer before looking behind it. If it's a gas model, don't pull it out or strain the gas connector; have a technician or qualified installer move it. The vent should be rigid or semi-rigid metal, about 4 inches wide, short, and not crushed. Plastic or foil accordion duct gets kinked easily and can make clothes stay warm but wet.
- Check the outside vent hood
Run the dryer on a heated cycle, then go outside and make sure the hood flap opens while air is blowing out. Clear lint, leaves, nests, or a stuck flap. Weak airflow outside points to a restricted vent path.
- Check cycle choice and load size
Use a sensor cycle for normal mixed loads, or timed dry with a high heat setting for towels and heavy items. The drum should be about one-half to three-quarters full so items can tumble. EcoBoost on some Maytag models lowers heat and can add about 40 minutes.
- Do a simple heat check
Run an empty heated cycle for 5 minutes, then open the door and feel inside. If there's no heat on an electric model, confirm both dryer breakers are fully on. For a gas model, don't adjust gas parts; stop there and have a technician check the supply and burner system.

The company will ask for it first. It's on a sticker or metal plate, usually in one of these spots:
- Inside the door opening, on the frame
- Some models: on the back panel
Conditions that make this more likely
Lint and dust build up faster than you'd think
Dryer vents, refrigerator condenser coils and dishwasher filters collect lint, pet hair and dust. Homes with pets, long vent runs or dusty surroundings usually need these cleaned more than once a year.
Check both breakers
Electric dryers and ranges run on a double 240V breaker. If only one leg trips, the drum can spin or the display can light with no heat. Reset both halves before assuming the appliance has failed.
What a technician tests
Most likely part first. These are for a technician with a meter and the tech sheet, not a weekend project.

Describe it on the phone. The company on the other end works on these every day and will know what to ask.

Will resetting the Maytag dryer fix a no-dry problem?
A reset may clear a control hiccup, but it won't clear lint, restore gas ignition, or repair a failed fuse. For an electric dryer, turn both dryer breakers fully off, then back on. If there's still no heat, a technician should test the heat circuit.
Why does my Maytag dryer get hot but clothes stay wet?
That points hard at airflow. Heat alone doesn't dry clothes; the dryer has to move moist air out of the drum. Start with the lint screen, rear hose, wall duct, and outside hood.
Is a gas Maytag dryer checked differently than an electric one?
Yes. Electric models use a heating element and 240 V supply. Gas models use an igniter, gas valve coils, and a flame sensor, so a technician looks at the burner sequence instead of an element.
Why do sensor cycles stop with clothes still damp?
The moisture bars may be coated with dryer sheet film, or the load may be too small to touch the bars well. Try a larger mixed load or timed dry. If timed dry works normally, the sensor circuit needs a closer check.
Should I keep running extra cycles?
A one-time heavy load can need more time. Repeated long drying is a warning sign, especially if the laundry room feels hot or damp. Stop and check airflow before a clogged vent overheats the dryer.
